A PATON connection in Renfrew? Can u help solve it??
« on: Friday 26 November 10 22:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find a connection between two PATON families who lived in the same roads (Manse St, Renfrew & Orchard St, Renfrew) from 1861 to 1881.

Family (1)

James Paton (b 1836 Paisley) & Elizabeth Jamieson lived in Manse St in 1866, when their first baby died here aged 2 days (i have death cert). I am trying to trace back James's line to see if there is connection. I discovered his father was called John Paton (born? died?)and mother was Annabella McLellan (b 1807 Paisley d 1892). (Obtained from James & Eliz marriage cert in 1859).

I can't find anything on John  Paton. I can't find him in any of the censuses, so assumed he must have died before 1841. In the 1859 marriage of his son James, John is listed as deceased. I did find a marriage between John Paton and Annabella McLellan (Or McKellan) on 19/12/1827. I am estimating his birth to be about 1805ish. I can't find his death on SP. (I checked the OPR's on SP and the John Patons who died in 1838 & 1847 are not him.)

Family (2)

My relatives, Robert PATON and Mary NIXON also lived in Manse St at the same time (1866). I was wondering if John Paton could have been their son and James their grandson? Robert was born 1778 Kilbarchan and i have only ever found one child for him and Mary NIXON, a Robert born 1819 Renfrew who also lived in Manse St & Orchard Sts. (his death cert has him born 1812).

Can anyone help with this?? :)
Much appreciated, as i am at a dead end!!!

Did you find James on the census with his mother? I can only guess the the following is the wrong family but since I accessed them on SP I thought I would write them down anyway.

I could only find one Annabella Paton on the census in 1851 and she is in Cambuslang.
In 1851 there is an Annabella Paton, widow aged 45
Robert Paton, son, unmarried aged 22
Agnes Paton, daughter, unmarried aged 18
James Paton, son aged 16
Ann Paton, daughter aged 14.
It states all born Paisley Renfrewshire.

What is strange is that when you search 1841 census for Annabella Paton - there are on three returns on SP and all young girls. There is one Annabella in Abbey Paisley aged 10 and an Annabella Paton aged 9 in Cambuslang, another in Beith.

I have looked at the 1841 census for Cambuslang on SP and it is odd as it has the following:

Janet Paton aged 30
Annabella Paton aged 9
Robert Paton aged 12
James Paton aged 7
Jean Paton aged 4
John Paton aged 6 months.

Hi - Thanks v much for your help :)

I think the 1851 census you found is correct. It is the same as i had found.

I also think the 1841 census with a 'Janet' is correct, as all the children match up and in Cambuslang. I am not sure how and why it shows Annabella as Janet though. In later censuses, she was known as 'Ann'. Since i can't find James,  i thought perhaps he had died. I notice the youngest child is just 6 months old.

I also notice the eldest child is called Robert. Annabella's parents were called John & Catherine. Robert could have been named after his grandfather???

There is a lot in common with the two families and i am sure there must be a link. If only i could find out more about the father, John Paton!!!
