Oldcastle- tracing GREEN family, score 1!
« on: Friday 26 November 10 06:31 GMT (UK) »
After years of searching I've finally discovered through army records that my gt. grandfather MICHAEL GREEN was listed as being born in "Oldcastle parish, near Oldcastle town, County Meath."

He had been in the Meath Militia, then joined the 64th brigade in Navan at age 18 in 1877.
(Source: The National Archives; Kew, England)

The family never spoke of his parents or siblings so I've wondered if he had been orphaned.

Now that I have this birth information, and we know he is buried in Knocktemple Cemetary (d. 1906), how can I go about finding a birth and death certificate?  He was listed as being Roman Catholic and if he was 18 in 1877 he would have been born about 1859.

Is it best to pursue parish records or civil records for that time?

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so to find information about Michael Green's birthdate and parents you would need to see if any church records of his baptism exist.
Death registrations also started in 1864- the civil registration index is online (free) and will show you the details needed to order his death certificate. See here for details included on death certificates, how to search the index and order certificates-

Ah yes, thank you.

Later last night I did go to the Family History website and was able to find the Irish civil registration index listings for the death of Michael Green Sr, his wife Catherine, and son Michael.
It lists film, volume, and page number, digital folder, and image number.

I'll start with tracking down copies of death certificates first then contact the parish for birth records.
Oh and thanks to Shane and others for this comprehensive instruction on ordering the certs. :

I can't express enough the happiness I feel at finding one more piece of the family puzzle.
Inch by inch...I think this hunt will keep me going until I'm 100!   ;D
