Haddock Family 1839-1964 - some "killed by tigers"
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 21:06 GMT (UK) »
A one-page family history of a Haddock family has come into my possession, and I hope it may prove of interest to Haddocks and their kin:---

Father Thomas James Haddock, born Ballinderry 1839.
Mother Martha Matilda Haddock born Connaught 1849.

Frances Isabell Haddock, daughter, born Sligo.
William Alex Haddock, son, born Sligo.
James Thomas Haddock, son, born India.
Egbert Isaac John Haddock, son, born India (Madras).
Mark Haddock, son, born Carlow (Ireland).
Charles Gifford Haddock, son, born at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast.
Harold Hamilton Haddock, son, born at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast
Beatrice Anna Haddock, daughter, born at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast.
Bertha Elizabeth Haddock, daughter, born at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast.
Madeline Mary Haddock, daughter, born at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast.

In addition to the above children, two babies died at birth, (of which) one was in Aldershot and is buried there.
Mother had 12 of a family, 7 boys and 5 girls.

My father was Sergeant T. Haddock. He married my mother in India, her father was Sergeant Wilson, (and) both were Indian Mutiny and Crimean War veterans.

My grandmother Wilson and baby are buried in India, they were killed by tigers.

My father and grandfather each had 21 years service in the Fuselleers (sic) and Princess Victoria’s Own.

When de-mobbed, my grandfather went home to Carlow, father and mother settled at 26 Osbourne St., Belfast.
Frances was the oldest, Madeline the youngest.. Madeline and myself (ie. Bertha Elizabeth) are the only ones left.
I will be 78 on September the 23rd, Madeline (will be) 76 on February the 28th.

B.E. Haddock
Married name Mrs. Wallace
29th May 1964.
O'Neill, Balmer, Dick, Lockhart, Jeffers, Morton, Ringland.

There are earlier parallels with the regiment and sub-continental fate ...

----
DIED
On Sunday the 25th inst. near Caledon, in the 95th year of her age, Mrs. HADDOCK, relict of the late James HADDOCK, of Corlaght, county of Tyrone, Esq., and mother of Major HADDOCK of the 97th Foot, (formerly a Colonel in the Portuguese service), who was killed by an elephant in the island of Ceylon in June 1828.

    The 89th (The Princess Victoria's) Regiment

... became

I was amazed to see this message posted - Bertha Haddock Wallace was my grandmother. I knew quite a lot about her siblings already and the India connection. However I did not know about the Crimean War connection or that my great-great grandmother was killed by tigers! Thanks so much for posting her statement. Wow!

Fascinating piece of family history.  Thomas Haddock was my g-g-grandfathers brother. Thank you for sharing.

I am also a descendant of Thomas Haddock and Martha Wilson. I have created a family tree, and can supply a Gedcom file to anyone interested. I am looking for more information on both James (Sergeant) Wilson - father of Martha, and Alexander Haddock, father of Thomas, who I have down as born 1791 in County Tyrone..

Steve, I also have not found much information on Alexander.  But since I am in the USA all I can do is internet searches. My grandmother was a Haddock, and I have many Haddock relatives in the Lurganville, Moira, Lisburn area.  I did come across this 1851 census fragment:

ISAC HADDOCK, 20 (Son) [Unmarried] - LINEN WEAVER (Antrim) (R)
THOMAS HADDOCK, 12 (Son) [Unmarried] - LINEN WEAVER (Antrim) (R)
BENJAMIN HADDOCK, 3 (Son) [Unmarried] - NONE (Antrim)
Absent from Household 30th March 1851:
JAMES HADDOCK, 27 (Son) - LINEN WEAVER {America}
ALEXANDER HADDOCK, 24 (Son) - ARMY {Cape of Good Hope}
WILLIAM JOHN HADDOCK, 22 (Son) - LINEN WEAVER {Antrim}

Died since 6th June 1841:

Glenn -

You seem to have got as far back as I have - I'm interested in adding the American side of the family, which I know nothing about, to the family tree. I have sent you a friend request on facebook, so we can continue the conversation.
