« on: Thursday 25 November 10 19:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi could someone please help - I'm trying to find a George William Barnett born 1874 married to Kathleen Groves on 1914 Portsmouth.  On his marriage cert it states father as William Barnett - can anyone help find out about him?? On 1891 census states wife as Eliz Launderess aged 36 but not sure I'm looking at the correct one  ??? forgot to add father was deceased on georges wedding cert in 1914
I've hit a real brick wall with this family and am starting to run out of steam - help please  :)

Do you know if George was born in Portsmouth?  And what was his father's occupation?

Have you found George in 1881, the census closest to his birth date?  It is free to search, and the transcriptions, on the FamilyFearch site.

Any clues from the witness names?

Nell

Hi I apologise for the delay (covering shifts due to snow!!)

All I have found out is according to George's Marriage cert he was born 1874 Portsmouth Father down as William deceased he was a general labourer, HM Dockyard living in 31 South Brighton Street, Southsea.

On genes I found two George Barnetts for the same year living in Portsmouth.  I dont have a subscription so a bit stuck?

Thanks

While the marriage certificate says "of this parish" or "of Portsmouth" that does not necessarily mean that he was born there, only that he lived there at the time of marriage.  However, if his father worked in the dockyard, the chances are that he was born in Portsmouth.

Might he have been William George?  Often happens that names get switched round.

Hi, no I'm sure it George - I've got the marriage cert?  I came into the common room to ask and I think its rather confused them too!! :)His father is a mariner (mercantile marine) so I guess he could be born anywhere? On the 1901 theres one William living in Portsea but with the name of Barnett how can I check its the right one??

Hmm, but people did lie, even on marriage certificates.  And anyway the requirement was to give the name by which they were commonly known.  It may not have appeared in his birth certificate!

From your previous message I thought the George's father had worked in the dockyard at Portsmouth, but if he was a merchant mariner, then Portsmouth is not the place I would expect to find him.  Southampton would be more the correct place.

There must be more to this than meets the eye - but how to find out?  :-\
