David

What happened to the medals?

the capital A will be short for 'Army' - dated 17/4/42 , the other series of numbers is the file ref for the piece of paper authorising his move.

You could always try searching the National Archives site - try South Wales Borderers - it should come up with a list of all docs held, inc by the museum.

Frustrating though it is, everything is guesswork until you have his service history.

Cheers

Pete

The medals? My grandmother did say I could have them. No I wonder did I have them. 15 years later and five houses. I will have to think this out. I have a feeling I showed them to my boys when they were younger. But did I borrow them? I have a strong feeling coming back to me, that my gran give them to me. I totally forgot all about them, they were in a small "tom thumb cigar box." I will have to do some hunting out next week. I am in Wales till tomorrow.

Will look into this.

Dear Helpers!

I have my fathers cap badge, photo uploaded. Because I am still in Wales, returning home after lunch. My brother said last night I could borrow the cap badge he was given 46 years ago, I forgot all about that badge.
It reads: GR Royal Army Service Corps SOIT.QUI.MAL.Y.PEHSE
That is what I can see. Any ideas?

David the last word is Pense. The whole sentence means Shame on him who think this evil....
Here is the RASC webpage http://www.rascrctassociation.co.uk/ the RASC is now the Royal Logistics Corp.
Your father was very important though he was too modest to say so.  Wellington said "An Army marches on its stomach" and its very true.  They fight better and do better if they were well fed.  Your father was one of those who helped the Army in Africa & Italy do that.  Depending on when he joined up he should have had the Defence Medal, the Victory medal plus the Africa/Italy Stars which would make the four you think you saw.  I hope you find them...
Good luck with find some more information.  I hope you find someone who remembers him!

Hi David

The Army Catering Corps was formed in 1941, prior to that each Regiment made its own arrangement.

Although the ACC has its own cap badge, at its formation it fell under the overall organisation of the Royal Army Service Corps, in the early days RASC badges etc were common.

It wouldnt surprise me to see on his service history that he was transferred to the RASC after completing his basic training and then further transferred to the ACC, even though he joined after the formation of the ACC.

Dont worry too much about things like supply of badges etc - in one Battalion of my Grandfathers Regt officers did not receive sidearms until late 1941, such was the shortage of equipment!

I'm guessing no-one else has his medals.....take that as encouragement that you have them somewhere!

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete
I am home again, and I have found what my grandmother gave me.

I believe only one medal of my father from Italy now the 8th Army. 10th July 1943.
The other looks like an artillary cap badge.
Is the third first or second world war?
Wales.

The top left look like WW1.

Bottom is indeed RA capbadge.

Dont think the Italy medal is an issued one, think it may be a private subscription one.

There are others, at the very least either the 39-43 or 39-45 star, will show up on his service history.

Cheers

Pete

Last week in the South Wales Borderers ledgers I did find a Walter T Walters. But if he is my grandfather I do not know. This is what I was given:
WALTERS, Walter T
Corps Wprc R Rank P/E Reg number 15329
Medal Victory 4/102b30 page 6557
Medal British   ditto
Medal 15 Star L/5B page 588
Theatre of war = France
Date of entre 5.1.1915.

My grandfather Walter Thomas Walters was born 5 Sept 1888 in Pengam, Monmouth and died 6 May 1952 in Pengam. I know he was a miner, and never thought they called up the miners.

My grandfather Edwin Tyler James on my mothers side was in the Royal Artillery in ww1. You never know if they ever met on the battle fields.
Wales.
