Crane Driver in Edinburgh
« on: Wednesday 24 November 10 21:49 GMT (UK) »
I've reached a brickwall regarding my great grandfather who lived in Edinburgh, but was born in Ireland. However, I'm not sure where.

According to various census records and certificates he was a Steam Crane Driver and later an Electric Craneman. This was during the period 1895 to 1920.

Does anyone know whether there are records somewhere that would give details of people employed in such a profession in Edinburgh during this time?

Thanks,
Denby

Hello,

My great-grandfather's name was Michael Carroll. He was born in Ireland, but married in Haddington in 1888. He moved to Edinburgh in the 1890's with his family and then was employed as a Steam Crane Driver and later an Electric Craneman up until sometime in the 1920's. I would like to find out more about him and also try to trace the tree back in Ireland. I will be very interested to hear what details you may have, especially if you have any information about crane drivers in Edinburgh.

Regards,
Denby

Hello Jane,

I'm pretty sure that we have been in touch before via GenesReunited, but that was a few years ago. Have you got any further details regarding Michael Carroll? I'm trying to discover where in Ireland he actually came from.

Regards,
Denby

Jane,

My grandmother is Mary who was born in 1908. The 1911 census shows that Bridget and Michael had 12 children, but three had died by 1911.

Hello Jane,

I've just read your reply after returning from holiday. There were three children born after Thomas. They were James (born 1904), Josephine (born 1906, died one year later) and Mary (born 1908).
