WEATHERBED & variations, bap. Nottingham
« on: Tuesday 23 November 10 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to identify the baptism of a James Weatherbed circa 1796 - spelling may be Weatherhed, Wetherbed, Weatherbred, Withered or similar.

James and his family were residents of St Mary's Nottingham, at the tme of the 1841 census and continued to reside there throughout the following couple of decades.

Weatherbed seems to be a staunch Nottinghamshire family surname - please can anyone help to identify James and his family which would help me to discover more about his roots?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
regards
Carol

Hi Syliva, thanks for your reply.

I have doubts about this as James declared he had been born Nottingham at the time of the 1851 census, therefore I would not have expected a birth to have occurred in Yorkshire.

However I will bear it in mind for the time being and am most grateful to you for replying.
Kind regards
Carol

Hello Carol,

Looking through St.Mary's Baptisms I cannot find a James Weatherbed or variant for circa 1796.

There is however a James Weatherbed baptised 13th June 1830 Parents James and Hannah living in Clinton Street Fathers occupation FWK ( Farmworker I Presume).

I don't know if this helps or not.

There are other children to James and Hannah.

Hello Carol :)

This is not going to help you in the least, but will maybe encourage you a little because I'm from Nottingham & I had a schoolfriend who I remember telling me that her mother's surname before marriage was Weatherbed/Wetherbed, because she said that she'd always been teased at school by other children calling her "Wet the bed" (sorry about that). As far as I know, she was from Nottingham, although I don't know how far back those roots went

If it helps in any way to trace back, my friend's mother (now dead) had the married name of Muriel Parr (so formerly Muriel Weatherbed etc)....& I'm 55, so I imagine she would have been born in the 1920s/30s

Thank you for each of these replies.

To Kayceebee5, the family whose baptism you found in 1830 is correct, it is the James Snr whose baptism I am seeking.  The James baptised in 1830 was their son.

However, I would be very interested to discover the names and dates of the other children baptised to James & Hannah if you are in a position to share with me.

It looks likely then that James Snr was not bapted at St Mary's, but in another parish.

To Greyingrey, I have traced the relevant Weatherbed line, it is the earlier ancestor who I am trying to identify.  I am looking at circa 1795 (the 1900s is far too recent, but thank you anyway).

Regards to all and many thanks
Carol  :-*
