Looking for one of my Great Uncles

Hi - I am new to this so please bear with me.  I am trying to locate information on my grandmothers older brother.  He is listed as Leonard John Walbeoff on my Great Grandfathers naturalization  papers in May of 1924, but listed as whereabouts unknown.  He was the only son and the eldest child of William and Elizabeth (Price) Walbeoff of Wales.

His residence in 1901 (per a census), is Brynwawr, Breconshire, Wales.  He is listed on a ships manifest dated 05Mar1921 as coming to the U.S. destination Pennsylvania.  Lists his home address as England and his father as a contact.

The rest of the family came over via a ship called Samaria at the port of Boston on 25May1922.  They made their home in Carbondale, PA.  My Great Grandfather was a coal miner.

I have searched his name through ancestry.com and it is attached to several people arriving to the U.S. aboard ships by themselves.  He may also be going by the name Jack.

I also found a marriage license request in the 1st quarter of 1939 in England - listed his bride to be's last name as "Burden or Crabbe"

If anyone has any information or help with this I certainly would appreciate it

There's a record for the marriage of Leonard J Walbeoff and Olive Griffiths in the Oct-Nov-Dec Q 1919 at Bridgend, Glamorgan and a record for Olive Walbeoff travelling to the US aboard the Aquitania, arriving 26 Jan 1928 with a son Caradog D Walbeoff.  The travel record also states that she is travelling to join her husband Leonard at 70 Wayne Avenue, Carbondale, PA which is the same address as that given on your gr grandfather's naturalization papers.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.

There is an earlier marriage entry for a Leonard J. Walbeoff marrying an Olive Griffiths in Bridgend in Oct qtr 1919.

Then in May 1939 there is a a ship manifest (arrival) at Southampton for an Olive Walbeoff aged 50 with onward address as 7 Queen St, Maesteg, Souht Wales. Maesteg is very near Bridgend.

The 1939 marriage in Birmingham is to Mrs Gwendoline G Burden (nee Crabbe)

Thank you to both of you - I wasn't able to find any of what you have provided.  Leonard just kind of dropped off the radar for me.  The Leonard in Carbondale, PA is most likely him.  It's very likely he had left Carbondale for a time since he ends up back there 4 years later with a wife and a son.  Just seems odd that he didn't list his wife on his first crossing to the U.S. as his home address.

Does that ship manifest give an age for the son?

It also looks as if I should maybe looking into divorce papers if Olive returned to Wales and he possibly remarried.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

7 Queen Street still exists - I'm not sure if it's the original house though. The street is standard valley terraces, but number 7 is a double fronted house set back from the other houses with a small frontal garden (the other houses sit smack on the pavement). I can easily get a photo for you on Saturday if you want one?

Caradog's birth seems to have been in the Maesteg/Bridgend area:

Jun 1920, 11a 1981, mother's maiden name is Griffiths

Can't locate a marriage or death for him in the UK on FreeBMD, but that doesn't real mean a lot I suppose.

General Google searches pull back a lot of Welbeoff's in Wales, generally Glamorgan

It's Walbeoff - and that is the area my grandmother comes from.  I found her birth record - Rhoda Walbeoff - mother's maiden name Price.  Bridgend District  11a 1729.  It is very possible that Caradog stayed in the states and died here (U.S.) - or may still be living.

So very excited (little things just send me over the edge...haha)

I have found a record on Caradog D. Walby - enlisted in the Army (my thinking for WWII) in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.  Pretty neat seeing as just a few days ago I had no idea that this 1st cousin of my fathers even existed!
As soon as our holiday weekend here is over, I am going to register for another trial on ancestry.com to see how much more I can find out!

A change of subject I'm afraid but I see that you are interested in the Sands family of Llandough. William Sands, c. 1750 - 1827, was my 4xgreat grandfather through his daughter Catherine. I'm just trying to collect information together about that side of the family. Have we a connection?
