Civilian award in WW1
« on: Monday 22 November 10 11:32 GMT (UK) »
In the town where I live it is generally accepted that a local civilian was awarded the MBE or OBE in WW1 for their part during a fire at a local munitions store.  All knowledge of the award I have gained so far is only by word of mouth but without any written clarification.
I believe I know the name of the person and the approximate date of the award, however having trawled through the difficult access to the London Gazette medal publications for 1914 through to 1925, I have yet to identify this award.

Can anybody please suggest how I can pin this elusive item down please.

How about an equally laborious trawl through a local newspaper?  Some are thankfully indexed, but not many!
There would obviously be a gap in time between the event and the annohncement of the award.  Many of this type seem to be included in the sovereign's birthday or the new year honours lists.

You say you have trawled through the "difficult" LG search engine [it is a nightmare] however there is now a much more user-friendly index available here:

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/indexes

I used it recently and found what I wanted in about a tenth of the time it used to take. Hope it helps.
