Sounds like you need to follow her through all the censuses if poss to narrow down dates.
Her marriage to Thomas isn't obvious on Free BMD.

In 1861 they are Cookham

William Middleton 34 head Ag Lab b Cookham
Ann Middleton 29 wife b Burnham Bucks
William Middleton 3 son b Cookham
Mary A Middleton 2 dau b Cookham

Where did you get mother's maiden name of Shepherd? I can't see a marriage for a Wm Middleton and Ann shepherd. FreeBMD has a marriage Dec Q 1854, Cookham  2c 753, between Wm Middleton and Anne Warwick. Family Search pilot site has a baptism 27/7/1832 Burnham Anne Warwick father Harry, mother Sarah.
Doesn't help with Mary Ann...........

 Hello :)
I hope i havent  confused the issue,
my great grandmother was mary ann middleton, born 1859..cookham berk...her father william middleton,...her mother ann shepherd....
mary ann (legal or not legal)we do not know for sure, first married thomas williamson,as there were williamson children..
mary ann then legally married john hunter in australia   QLD BMD..there were.children to this marriage as well..her death 1935 CAIRNS QLD BMD.
we have not been able to establish when she left england or on which ship, but there were times we have found she used her mother's maiden sur- name, which was "shepherd"which she frequently  would use... mary ann shepherd,    for eg. when she had  children...(not middleton as it should have been)
for a long time the family was to the understanding her maiden name was shepherd,it was only after death.her death cert showed ,her father as middleton and mother shepherd.obtained from other papers she had..
we now wonder what her reason was for doing this...
some family members have suggested maybe she was transported..for some reason
we are looking into this but so far have not been able to find anything..of this nature..but will continue to look..
thank you all for your help it is appreciated very much..cheers Lynne ;)

No Lynne you haven't confused things, but we are saying we cannot find a marriage of her parents ,to prove that her mum was Ann Shepherd.
Alison asked earlier tonight where did you get that maiden name from?

I still insist that you need to find her on as many censuses as possible and then also find when she arrives in Oz,so we can narrow down when she left here to travel out there.

I cannot find her in 1881(which is free to search)- wonder if anyone else can find the Middleton family?
