Potters of Earlsheaton / Soothill, Dewsbury
« on: Sunday 21 November 10 21:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching the Exley and Potter part of my family from Earlsheaton, Dewsbury.

I was wondering if anyone is doing the same and has found a birth date or christening record for Mark Potter who married Lucy Scott in 1817 (parents of Marcella Exley nee Potter) as I am hoping to confirm who his parents were.

It seems from some of the research I have done that Mark Potter ended up in debtor's prison at York for a lengthy period, however I have been unable to find out what happened to him and whether he was ever released. If anyone has any information about what happened to him I'd also be really interested to know.

Thanks!

There is a christening in Darley, Derbyshire, England if it's any good.

Mark potter Christened: 22 May 1780 parents: James Potter and Elizabeth

Any good?

Dividends were paid out on his bankruptcy 1841 so it is unlikely he would be in prison.  If your Mark Potter was a blanket manufacturer of Earls Heaton and had daughters Mercy and Mary Ann then he must have died between their marriages in June 1844 and Dec 1844 when he was then described as the late Mr Mark Potter of Earlsheaton.
Did he marry a second time?  I saw a marriage of a Mark Potter, blanket manufacturer, Earlsheaton to a Emma, Daughter of Mr Archer of Ossett in June 1834 at Dewsbury Parish Church

Hi
I agree with Ebch on the 1834 marrage to Emma Archer. ?There is a Birth for a Mark Potter 1810 at Dewsbury parents Benjamin and Mary. Also a death 1854 atDewsbury for a Mark potter. ?There is a report of a Mark potter blanket manufacturer of Earlsheaton
declared bankrupt in dec 1839

Thanks everyone. I think there are other Mark Potters within the family around that time, and that the one who married Emma Archer was born 1810 and is a nephew of the one I am looking for. The Wakefield baptism in 1788 may be him though, and I will keep an eye out for a Derbyshire connection.

Ebch - Can I ask where you found out that dividends had been paid out on his bankruptcy? I have only been able to find information about his bankruptcy in the London Gazette which lists him as being in York gaol in 1856, however I am fairly new to family history so may not be looking at the right sources.

Thanks for your help!
