Thank you for your message, but I am still unable to ascertain the gipsy link!
I have the full history of the two Alfred’s born in the district within two years of each other.
As this one born c1831 did not marry and had no known children born to him, it appears that the line has ended!
Am I missing a trick here?

The Roman Gypsy Connections site shows an extract of people with the "Rank, Profession or Occupation" of "Hawker" taken from the 1881 E&W census lists.
The Romany & Traveller FHS has name lists but with not much commonality with RGC list.
I think that the list is misleading a great many people.

I do not believe that all "hawkers" are gypsies, take Michael Marx for instance, certainly a hawker but no gypsy!

Country people used to call such people "Didikoi or Diddicoy" when I was young. The OED definition is slang- "intinerant traveller, Gypsy or Romany", which I expect will now be deemed as inaccurate!

Hi,

In the Chelmsford area of Essex where I was born and raised the Romany people were called Gypsies or Romanies and non Romany travellers Diddicoys.

I often wondered about the origin of the word Diddicoy and the other week I found a post on RootsChat which gave me that origin, the post can be found here:-

One of my great aunts was a Romany, she married my paternal grandmother's brother  8)
