Hello Mr MIGKY

Reference to your post dated 13th August 2010 on Lancashire Look Up Offers, could you please tell me if there are any with the surname Gilleeney?

My grt grandfather was from St. Helens and fought in WW1 for the KLR 4th Bn, he doesn't appear on any BMD registers or census returns except 1911...

Migky will be offline until next month but I have contacted him on your behalf

Looking on the free 1911 index - I can only see 2 entries for that surname that match with a St Helens birthplace

John b 1874 and living in Leigh
Jane b 1890 and living in Prescot

EDIT - just seen a Peter GILLENEY b1868 - is that him?

Using only the free 1911 index - the only son old enough to have served in WW1 was William b 1893

The 1901 has a GILLINEY family with a son William aged 8  RG13 Piece 3526 Folio 114 Page 16

Peter Gillenay    Prescot  8b 1090   
Esther Harrison

If William was your great grandfather - this is probably his birth reg

William Gillheeney December qtr 1892  Prescot  8b  738

You will find Peter indexed as GILLHENY in 1891 ref RG12 Piece 3026 Folio 64 Page 7

The marriage is on the IGI pilot website - 4.6.1892 Sutton

fathers were Nathan Harrison (see 1901 entry) and Peter Gillenay

The WW1 medal roll shows  Royal Lancashire Regiment Regimental Number 13106 and that he served in France

Thank you everyone for all your help.

I should have given more information! My grt grandfathers name was John Gilleeney, he married Sophia Saile in 1907 and died in 1952 (aged 82). They had seven children including my grandmother Martha Gilleeney, one of her sisters - Lucy - is still alive.

On John's marriage certificate he states that his fathers name is also John and that he is deceased at the time of their marriage. The story I've been told is that his father worked as an engineer on the mines and that he died suddenly on a Manchester railway station and that his mother remarried. I don't know his mother's name or who she married.

I would like to trace the family history but he or his family don't appear on the 1901 (Boer War), 1891 or 1881 census returns and I can't find him on the birth records.

I can't find his father on any of the death registers either...

I know that in WW1 he served in the Kings Liverpool Regiment (4th Extra Reserve #11882) and the the Labour Corps (#413665) and that he also fought in the 2nd Boer War. Unfortunately none of his records survive except for a medal card.

Hi,

my name is John Gilleeney, nephew to your Grandmother Martha. I have just found your searches on this site. I am the son of Alfred Gilleeney, one of Martha's brothers. The medal that my Grandad, your Gt Grandad was awarded in the Boar war was handed down to me as I was the first male grandson with the Gilleeney name. My Dad's other brothers had daughters.
The medal is for the Defence of Ladysmith and it does show his number as being 4374.
I f you have other information on our Family History, I would love to hear from you.

Hello John

Thanks for contacting me, if you send me your email address I will send you what info I have. I did find his Boer War record in the end but it is great that you have his medal and it stayed in the family.

My dad (Fred Lomax) remembers Alf very well, I think he was one of Martha's favourites. I spoke to Robert Dale (Lucy Gilleeney's eldest) a couple of days ago, for the first time, and he was telling me that Alfred was always the live and soul of any family gathering!

I have found it really difficult tracing the Gilleeney side of our family tree. They don't appear on any census records except 1911.
