I'm no expert but I think the upper line is a Chandlers Shop, and the lower one might be a Mantua maker.

Odd mixture, but nothing says they have to work together does it?   A Chandlers Shop I would presume would be sailing related - so that won't make sense if they are somewhere totally landlocked - and a Mantua Maker could be a Milliner, in that Mantuas I think are like a lacy headcover - not a hat exactly but the sort of thing that ladies in Spain, Greece etc are seen to wear covering their heads when they go to Mass.   It might seem odd in the UK but I'm pretty sure (from a youth misspent reading Georgette Heyer) that would be a perfectly reasonable word / occupation in 1841.    Anyone else see something different?

p.s. Oops red collision, but it does look as if everyone agrees

If you check out the links Mort and I posted you'll discover (this was also new to me  :D ) that a mantua is nothing to do with headgear!

Oh dear Jen, no argument, but that means that either Georgette Heyer had her details wrong (impossible) or that my memory is even worse than I realised!

p.s. - have just realised - I am an idiot!    I was thinking of a Mantilla!!    Anybody else out there having a really bad senior moment day?

As for Chandler shop... Possibly... it certainly looks like that... They lived in East end,

Just looked on the 51 census, and it says she was a shop assistant

A long-shot, I know, but could the Daughter possibly have been a 'Mantle Mkr'?

Good luck in your research.
