Battersea 1871 census for Leicester
« on: Monday 11 April 05 20:28 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather - Maternal Side - shows on the 1891 Census entry for Battersea as follows:
Page 39/106, London, Battersea, St Mary, Ward No5, Entry 277
23 Harrowway Road, Arthur Leicester, Head, M, 22, Labourer ?unreadable? born London Battersea.

Could SCS look him up on the 1871 Census or even the 1881.

I thought I had found him and have ordered the wrong certificate as it is from Kensington. If it is wrong I'll offer it to any relative, but am retaining it for now.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, can't spot him in 1871 or 1881
Do you have his marriage cert which will state father and possibly give us an extra clue?

Possible marriage:-

DARLING, Agnes Mary 1888 September Marriages Wandsworth London Surrey
Grover, William 1888 September Marriages Wandsworth London Surrey
LEICESTER, Arthur Henry 1888 September Marriages Wandsworth London Surrey
Norris, Eleanor Jane 1888 September Marriages Wandsworth London Surrey

 Qrt ending Sept 1888
Wandsworth 1d 1107

Al I can find is the Kensington chap.

The unreadable bit looks like Rivetting or similar

Something slightly odd here because that marriage entry matches the birth entry for Arthur Henry Leicester in 1870 in Kensington.

Were there 2 of them marrying an Agnes. Why do you say the birth cert which you ordered was incorrect. Do you know the parent's names?

Hi Tricia

Thanks for your help. I have the following I am as certain as I can be about - tracing backwards.

My grandfather Thomas Edward LEICESTER was born 14/4/1901 and celebrated his 100th birthday which I was at.
His birth Cerificate gives father's name as Arthur Henry LEICESTER and mother as Agnes May DARLING.
[1D 782 entry 329, East Battersea, Wandsworth, London]
Arthur Henry LEICESTER married Agnes May DARLING 6/8/1888
[1D 1149 entry 65, St Faith's, Wandsworth, Surrey]
The 1891 Census return is as laid out above with son Arthur (1yr) and daughter Alice (5mth) with Arthur Henry LEICESTER giving birth as London Battersea at Age 22.
My next tracing was from the CWGC as he is believed to have died in WW1.
This gave me Arthur Leicester b. 1870 in Battersea. Service No. 30367 with the 2/4th Battalion (Terratorial Force, Loyal North Lancs. Enlisted Mill Hill Middlesex. Rank private died 03/06/1918 Flanders - France.
This led me to the questionable certificate.
Arthur Henry LEICESTER b. 26/9/1870, 1 Bute Street to Mary Ann LEICESTER with no father details. [1A 154 entry 44, Brompton, Kensington, Middlesex]. The confusion is the Battersea/Kensington birth differences. I suppose he could have 'lied' on the census/enlistment due to an unmarried mother?. If so then I will have to check the Kensington entries.

What do you think.

Sorry about the long explanation. Thanks again

Your Arthur Henry Leicester definitely married Agnes Darling - do you have this marriage certificate. It will either name the father or not(which would then link up up with that birth certificate).

It may also have witnesses who may help. We can then have another look at the earlier census :)

Hi Tricia
I am sorry for not replying earlier but time has flown by. I have checked the marriage of Arthur Henry to Agnes Mary. His father is given as Arthur Leicester (deceased) and her father is given as Douglas Darling (deceased). The witnesses are given as George Travis Gorman and Margaret Peters.
As Arthur's father on the Kensington birth cert is not given I am unable to follow this unless I can find father/son/mother on the census records of 1881 or 1871. So this will have to be my next route.

Hi Eejay

Are you still looking for this family in 1901/1881/1871?   If so, then could you please post the address from you grandfather's 1901 birth certificate and any addresses on the marriage certificate.

Best wishes

Hello,

As part of routine housekeeping, I notice that you have not responded to the re-query to ask for further information in addition to those provided in your original request.  I am assuming therefore that you are no longer looking for this information and will move this topic into the Completed Requests section.

If this is not the case, please PM me and I will move it back into the Lookup Requests and hopefully someone will attempt to answer it.

Regards
Jonathan
