I am so impressed by all the replies I have received from this post - 1000 thankyous to all of you! I love the photo of Alexander & Elizabeth - the mind boggles that these people are probably my great great grandparents! The John Mathew born in 1822 must be a so far unknown relative - I have added him to my tree. I wasnt aware that widows reverted back to using their maiden names - adds the confusion & difficulty in tracing relatives. Silly question - but howcome do you guys all have access to the cencus records? Try as I may, I cant get access to these (they all ask for a credit card number and call me old fashioned, but I dont give out my cc number to anyone over the internet). Hows does one get hold of this sort of info for free?

Hi niknak  :)

People on here have paid subscriptions that give them access to census material.

Sometimes there are options to pay subscription other than over the internet. For example you can buy vouchers for FindMyPast (see FAQs - Vouchers) and you can contact Anc*stry to pay by telephone on 0800-404-9723. Check the website for the site you are interested in.

Some libraries have free access to Anc*stry library edition.

Hi Nicky,
My great great grandfather, Robert Matthew(s) was born in Markinch in 1796, I believe his parents were William Matthew and Agnes King.  There are many of the family buried in the churchyard there, and I am trying to piece together how they are all related.  I believe your Alexander may be a nephew of my Robert.  I would be interested to hear how your research has progressed.

For the timeline to work out, Robert must have been a brother to my GGG grandfather, Thomas Matthew (b 1780) who was married to Christina Todd (or Christian Todd). I have no info about his siblings or parents. And then yes, he would have been Alexander's uncle. Cool! If you can verify that Robert had a brother called Thomas, that would be great, I dont have access to the Ancestry website anymore. Please let me know!

Hi Nicky,
I don't think they were brothers.  But I do think it very likely they were cousins.  So far I only have one sibling for my Robert, named William.  I do know that Robert had 2 nephews come to Canada, so I do know he had at least one sibling.  And one of those nephews, James, named his daughter Agnes King Matthews, presumably after her grandmother. So I am fairly confident that Agnes King was the mother of my Robert.  Now to piece together the rest of the family!

Ah so you think Thomas and Robert were cousins and not brothers. Possible. Thank god they loved  family names back in the day! It does make finding them a bit easier!

Going back to the info here as to the parents of "your John Mathew" being James Mathew & Janet Pierson - I have checked on familysearch and according to them, this couple had 4 kids, none of which was called Thomas. I cant find any links for my Thomas! I can see he had children with Christian Tod, but cant find either his parents or her parents.
