Looking for Thomas Reardon

I have run into a brick wall with my second great grandfather Thomas Reardon and hope that someone may have more information.  Here is what I know: Thomas Reardon was born abt 1840 in Ireland and died bef 1924 in Durham, England.  He was Roman Catholic.  He married Rose Ann (also listed as Roseanna) Harvey at St. Mary's Church in Sunderland, Durham (unsure of the year). He likely lived in Thornley, Durham later in life. He worked as a bricklayer journeyman.

There is a marriage in Free BMD Q4 1867 for a Roseanne Harvey and a Thomas Rearden Jones, Sunderland Registration District. The same information is available on the Sunderland Registrars website where he is listed as Thomas R Jones.

I can't see another marriage that looks possible. What were the names of their children and approx birth years? WIth that info we could look in the census returns and see if we can help you find them

That looks like the baptism of Peter, which bears out that the family on the 1871 census were Catholic and puts the surname back to Jones again :-)

That baptism is for James (Jacobus in Latin)  now they are Reardon again.

There may be others on the family search beta site. To find those I looked in England Baptisms, advanced search, put in surnames for either Jones or Reardon, left the child's first name blank, put in a year range from when they married, location Durham, England and parents first names as Thomas and Rose.

Wow!  I'm pretty new to this site and already I'm amazed with other members willingness to help me in my search    I need to source the marriage location--I think I got that info from my cousin who isn't too diligent when it comes to documenting things.  I know that the surname is REARDON though, so I'm not sure about the record mentioning Jones.  The beta search info is really helpful--I should have added the children's information to my original post:

Do you have access to the ww1 service records on ancestry? I have just looked at Robert Reardon's service record (he had two service numbers so check them both) Its very odd that when the family filled out the form listing living blood relatives so that the army could dispatch the memorial scroll to them, the space for his father's name was left blank.
That could mean that Thomas was not alive then, or it could mean that he had left the family, I don't know.
That form was signed by John Reardon and witnessed by the local catholic priest, it was dated Sep 1919.


I assume you have confirmation of Rose Ann's maiden name of Harvey? - birth cert for one of her children for instance.
Do you know anything else about Rose prior to her marriage? If you know her father's name, you could email Sunderland registrars and ask if they would check the register for you to see if her father's name ( and occupation if you know it) matches for that marriage in 1867. Sometimes registrars will help if you ask them about specifics (though obviously wont tell you anything new or do involved searches),  its always worth a shot at asking them.
