Goudhurst birth-John Morris
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I am trying to find the birth details of John Morris, my  G G G grandfather, born possibly between 1824 and 1826.  On his military records it said he was born in Goudhurst.
He was a convict sent to Western Australia on the first ship the Scindian in 1850.  I have all of his convict details and military records just need to know birth details, so I can find family links.  His father was John , and havent been able to get a mothers name.

Masny thanks in advance for your help and suggestions

I can't find a John Morris being born between 1824 & 1826 but a John Morris was born 1818 whose father was John:
- John Morris / Born: 20 May 1818 / Baptism: 21 Jun 1818 - Goudhurst, Kent, England / Father: John Morris / Mother: Maria / Residence: otp / Father's Occupation: Carpenter

The next John Morris born in Goudhurst was in 1834 - parents Thomas & Sarah Morris but most likely died in 1835.

Marriage:
- John Morris (Bachelor, otp) / 12 Dec 1817 - Goudhurst, Kent, England / Spouse: Maria Cook (Spinster, otp) / Type: Banns

You can find John & Maria (Harriott? in the return) in 1841 census at:
- Class: HO107 / Piece 473 / Book: 3 / Folio: 27 / Page: 6 / Line: 3

You can find John & Maria in the 1851 census at:
- Class: HO107 / Piece: 1619 / Folio: 276 / Page: 19

Looking a bit further, it looks like the John Morris born in 1818 married Caroline Horscroft in Q3 1838. In 1851, John, a carpenter, is living with his wife Caroline & family in Northfleet, Kent, England

There was another John Morris born in 1815 in Goudhurst - parents John & Winifred Morris but it looks like this John Morris married Mary Ann Drawbridge in Q4 1850. In 1851, John, an agricultural labourer, is living with his wife Mary Ann in Goudhurst.

There is a marriage of a John Morris to Frances Manklow [poss. Manktelow] in Goudhurst on 27 Apr 1839. John's father's name was John Morris.

Hello Kish

I've been looking at the 1841 census too, and I wonder if your John Morris might be the one living in nearby Cranbrook, b ~ 1826 and working as a grocer's apprentice. There are no other Morrises listed in Cranbrook, so this one clearly seems to be working away from home. His age fits very nicely into the John and Harriet family in Goudhurst that Robin mentioned: there's Susan ~ 1824, Sophia ~ 1828, Ann ~ 1830, Maria ~1832, Albert ~1834, Samson ~1836 and Thomas ~1840. (I wonder if there was one in 1838 who died young?)

There are loads of other Morrises in Goudhurst, including an older John, b ~ 1771, who is also a carpenter.

Thank you Kath and Robin

John's birth date listed on his convict records say he was born in 1824.  As he left England on the Scindian in 1850, there would be no record of him in the 1851 census, or marraiges.

Could he have been born in Goudhurst but his birth registered in Cranbrook.

John may have moved out of home at a young age because he was recriuted into the army in 1846 at the age of 22 at Hawkhurst, Private in 62nd Regiment of Foot.

Cheers

This John and Caroline are my 3GGparents.  They emigrated to US in 1859.  Do you have any further details regarding this couple or their ancestors?

Hi Frothingham

Sorry I cant help you on this john morris.  My John Morris was born in 1824ish not 1818.  He was never married in England as he was sent to Western Australia as a convict.

The only way I know he was born in Goudhurst is his last muster when he he was transported for his crime
