John Thomas
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 07:15 GMT (UK) »
This seems to be tricky for me to find my paternal GGF John Thomas and his first wife maybe Mary GGM.  Their son was named George born Town Hill, Swansea in 15 September 1901 and he had a sister possibly called Annie (apparently migrated to Canada).    GGF John Thomas worked until he was 80 in the mines of Wales and received a Octogenarian award, which I have the paper cutting in The Express, Saturday Dec 19 1953.  It was taken at the workmens Hall at Ystrad Mynach.  In 1953 he was living in Brynheulog, Penbryn.  He was married 3 times 1st Wife my GGM ? 2nd  Wife Evelyn Amelia Wedlake b. 1866, m. 1907 d. 1926. 3rd Wife ? Its was Evelyn's 2nd marriage so her name was Barrett when she married my GGF John Thomas.  If anyone can help me with this it would be much appreciated. Poppy Turnip

Just to add a bit more on it says in one of the paper cuttings that John Thomas is a native of Dinas Rhondda and the son of a miner starting working as a colliers help at age of 12 yrs near Porth.  Before going to Penallta, he also worked at Bargoed and Groesfaen Collieries.  Also says in the article that has lived in the Rhymney Valley over 30 years. Hope this helps too.

Poppy Turnip,

Think I might have John + 2nd wife Evelyn Amelia on 1911 Census - unable to post details - but there are inconsistencies. This George was not born Swansea.

The Census reference is RG14PN32684 RG78PN1866 RD953 SD1 ED3 SN82

FreeBMD has the birth registration of George Thomas Dec 1901 Swansea 11a 991. The registration qtr would fit your George born 15 September 1901. Do you have this birth cert?

1901 Census RG13 5018 76 49

George Smith, head, 60, Coal Miner Hewer Below Ground, Haverfordwest, pembs
Ellen Smith, Wife, 57, Rhymney
John Smith, Son, 23, Coal Miner Hewer Below Ground, Aberdare
Anne Smith, Dau, 21, Aberdare
John Thomas, Son - in - Law, 27, Coal Miner Hewer Below Ground, Llantrisant
Mary Thomas, Dau - in - law, 25, Swansea
Address 1 Upper Brithwennydd Cottages, Ystradfodwg

Possible John Thomas + Mary? If so, might this Mary have returned to Swansea to have George?

Speculative - John Thomas is a common name and have used birthplace of John Thomas 1911 Census to find this John + possible wife Mary.

regards

Bit puzzled by Mary Thomas' description as "Dau-in-law" in 1901, but clearly recorded as such.

But on basis that she is George Smith's daughter there is a possible marriage on FreeBMD -

John Thomas, Jun 1900, Pontypridd, 11a 880 with a Mary Smith on the same page.

regards

Census 1891 RG12 4443 4 1

George Smith, Head, M, 50, Coal Miner, H'west
Ellen Smith, Wife, M, 47, Rhymney
Wm Smith, Son, 17, Swansea
Mary Smith, Dau, 15, Swansea
John Smith, Son, 13, Aberdare
Thomas Davies, Fath in Law, Widower, 77, Shoemaker, Caerphilly
Address 6 Harriet St, Aberdare.

Note - re earlier post. There wd have been no reason for the 1901 Mary Thomas (nee Smith?) to return to Swansea to give birth (possible suggestion) if she was already with parents George and Ellen? Pl discount.

FreeBMD has the birth registrations of
George Thomas, Mar 1901, Pontypridd, 11a 585
George Thomas, Mar 1901, Pontypridd, 11a 552

Pl note still all very speculative

regards

Dear Poppy Turnip,
I did a speculative search this morning on Evelyn Amelia WEDLAKE. She is my Great Grand Aunt and I do not have a lot of information about her and I was seeking to fill some gaps. I knew that she was born in Jul/Aug/Sep 1866 at Swansea. Her parents were John WEDLAKE (1835-1900) and Elizabeth THORNE (1837-1890). I knew that she married in Jul/Aug/Sep 1893 and that there were 4 possibles spouses. One of these was John BARRETT which is confirmed by you. That is most helpful. Thank you. I certainly didn't know that she married again, or her date of death. Again most helpful. As to your search I am not sure that I can help as I do not have a John THOMAS amongst the 1800+ names on my family tree. I could help a lot with WEDLAKES if you are interested.
Kind regards, Roger Wedlake (roger@wedlake.myzen.co.uk)
