Keen - Cheadle
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 13:16 GMT (UK) »
Having encountered the proverbial brick wall, a couple of months ago I decided to attempt a different approach.

I made a list of all freebmd entries for Cheadle (registration district) with the surname Keen.

At the time there were 71 entries.
Comprising
36 births
18 marriages
17 deaths

I then started trying to match known parents and spouses to the names commencing with the births

Of the births I am reasonably certain of the parents of 24 of the individuals (and they are all children of children of children etc of the same initial family).

So I wondered of the other 12 (2 born after 1911) should any of them be in my tree and who are their parents.

I was wondering therefore if anyone could help with any of the following individuals (pre 1911 births)

Name         Year/QTR    Current thoughts
Mary Ann Keen      1846 Mar
Matilda Keen      1856 Mar
William Hughes Keen   1862 Dec
Jane Anne Adams      1863 Mar    Possibly daughter of Joseph Keen and Jane Adams
Thomas Hayward J                   1867 Mar    Possibly son of James Keen and Anne Hayward
Mary Margaret E      1875 Jun    Possibly daughter of James Keen and Anne Hayward - ? large gap ?
James Thomas      1880 Jun
Charles John      1885 Mar    ? Possibly son of Daniel Keen and Sarah Annie Martin (formerly Heath)
Henry         1907 Sep    ? Possibly son of Henry Daniel Keen and Annie E Kay
Annie Elizabeth      1909 Jun    ? Possibly daughter of Henry Daniel Keen and Annie E Kay

Any thoughts or information that anyone may help will be very gratefully received

Ive bee researching my family Tree 'Titley' and ahve come across the name 'Keen' Please see below my suspicions regarding  some of the Keen's you've listed:

Charles was the 4th child of Daniel & Sarah Anne Keen (nee Martin) born in Dilhorne, Cheadle in 1882(DI/18/012) and died at birth(DI/10/097)

Henry Daniel Keen (b.1882 – 1959)
Henry was the 2nd child of Daniel & Sarah Anne Keen (nee Martin) born in Dilhorne, Cheadle in 1882(DI/18/012).

Elizabeth Anne Heath his step sister was also living with them.

They had 5 children although only three survived; Henry (died at birth in 1907), Ann Elizabeth born in 1909, Nellie (Also died at birth in 1912), Philip Ronald born in 1913 and Charles Henry born in 1914.
Henry died, aged 77 in Cheadle in 1959(CAA/01/186).

Elizabeth Ann Heath (b.1876 – )
Elizabeth was the only child of Thomas & Sarah Anne Heath (nee Martin) born in Caverswall Cheadle in 1876(DI/14/067).
In 1881[113] Elizabeth Anne aged 6, was living with her grandparents Rupert (Dyer Labourer) & Sarah Heath aged 71 and 61 respectively at 4 School St. Leek.

Sarah Ann Martin (1855 - 1913)

In 1871 [  ] she was living with her parents and two siblings; Fanny & Charles in Caverswall.
Sarah married Thomas Heath in Cheadle in 1875(CR/4/72). He probably died in 1878 after the birth of Elizabeth Ann Heath in 1876(DI/14/067).
Sarah re-married to a Daniel Keen (Born in 1833) at St. Peter’s in Caverswall in 1880(12C/3/147). They also had 4 boarders all of whom were Electricians.
Sarah, aged 58, died in Dilhorne in 1913(DI/18/22)

Thank you SO very much for your information.

I have a couple of things I would like to add.

I do not think that Philip Ronald is the son of Henry Daniel Keen and Annie Elizabeth Kay.
My reasons are as follows
1) birth registration on freebmd gives MMN as Keen
2) Henry Daniel Keen has a war record on Ancestry (service number 12430) which lists his wife and 2 children. Annie Elizabeth born 2 Apr 1909 and Charles Henry born 29 Jul 1914
As Philip is not on war record I conclude he was not his son. But as I don't have a birth certificate I cannot be certain. Do you have any further thoughts?

There is another birth of a Keen MMN Kay child in 1925 Winifred Cissy so a fifth child could be likely.

Thank you for the info on Sarah Ann Martin parents. This enabled me to find them in 1881 and 1891 census returns. Living with them is a grandson George Henry Heath born 1877/1878. So another child of Sarah Anne Martin and Thomas Heath.

Thanks again.

Glad the info was of some use. Not sure where I got the information re Philip R keen but would agree with your position as lack of evidence from war record would suggest you are correct.

Cannot find any reference to George Henry Keen, grandson, can you point me to which census record this is in please?
