95th Foot. What was he?
« on: Tuesday 16 November 10 10:13 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was on his wedding certificate and two census returns as Soldier 95th. Reg.

My Grandmother was born at The Euston Hotel Fleetwood, at that time a Barracks, again he was living there and a Private in 95th.

On contacting The Sherwood Foresters some time ago, they had no record of him.

Is this normal that he would not have been registered?

He had children in Pembroke Dock and Gosport.

At he time he married 1868,his address was The Encampment Pemboke Dock.  There is no mention of 95th being at the Encampment at Pembrokeat that time. Was he following the Regiment around and pretending to be a soldier?
Has anyone any ideas,

Thanks
Jakky

Have you tried here for his records? Its where I found my 95th (Derbys) soldier.

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/chelsea-pensioners-service-records-collection-search-start.action

Also you could try a search at FIBIS, I found a marriage  record there for mine, they were in India in 1864/65

http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/index.php

I dont think there is much else left except medal rolls and casualty lists.  At least some of the 95th (there may have been two battalions/Depots or more)  were still in India until  1870 and from there went to Ireland (Armagh) and then to Hampshire (Gosport) in 1871.

Did you find their marriage ccertificate which could give more detail of his rank etc, there may also be an army record of the marriage on Findmypast.

The records of a George Barcock are amongst those records. No dates given though.

However, I noticed that he was recorded as a general labourer in the 1881 census.

Jakky,

That sounds very interesting. Do tell us more!

Was he actually a private in the 95th as he claimed?

Possibly the drink, it was a very hard life for them and they must have been very stressed and exhausted half the time, the only way they had to relax was the cheap alcohol in the meeting rooms provided for recreation.  Wouldnt think it was desertion because he would have been executed for that,  possibly not being on duty when he should be due to drunkeness. My soldier was demoted two times from sergeant for this but still managed two good conduct badges and made it back up the ranks quickly enough ( his daughter had just died on one of the occasions )

Hi,

Possibly!
Just checking the dates and he served 21  years and 13 days. days, he did  1 year Crimea and 8years in East Indies, but he appears to have joined 6th Dec.1864 and left 22 June 1975, there must be a simple explanation for this so what am I missing here?

He has quite a few medals and a couple of days short of his 5th good conduct badge, so he can't have been that bad.

I am confused by the dates though,

Hi,

Thank you for that, I can see it now, but I still do not understand. Does it mean he served in95th for ten years berfore the date of 6th Dec 1864? Sorry to be so thick but I  would assume that it might have come up with his record.

Thanks again Jakky
