Thomas Gamble of Leicester
« on: Tuesday 16 November 10 08:30 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track down the wife of Thomas Gamble, married in Leicestershire - possibly Ashby de la Zouch in 1850.  His wife's name was Jane but I am stuck between a Jane Princeps and Jane Bates whom both married a Thomas Gamble in 1850.  Any pointers would be gratefully received!

Welcome to RootsChat Andy  :)

Both the marriages you found were in Leicester district, where Thomas and Jane were living in 1851.

Jun 1850, Thomas Gamble to either Emily Burton, Sarah Ireland, Ann Outram or Jane Princeps
Sep 1850, Thomas Gamble to either Jane Bates, Sarah Brown, Martha Foster or Eleanor Garner

According to this site
http://web.archive.org/web/20021008132109/www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pond/1598/gpage.html

- the Jun 1850 marriage was Thomas Gamble to Jane Princeps
- the Sep 1850 marriage was Thomas Gamble to Sarah Brown

Hi Tati,

Thanks for the welcome and the information!  My confusion arose as the only source I had seen was on FreeBMD and I could only narrow it down to either of the Jane's.  The Princeps surname could prove an interesting one to follow up.

Andy.

According to later censuses, Jane was born Ibstock ca. 1828.

From there, we find

1841 census
HO107/601/10 14 20
Ibstock, Leicestershire

John Prencip, 40, Frame Work Knitter
Jane, 45
Sarah Ann, 20, Frame Work Knitter
Charles, 15, Coal Miner
Jane, 13
Eliza, 11
Harriett, 8
John, 5
George, 3

All born in county

To be 100% sure that Jane Pr*nc*p is the lady you're looking for, you could order one of the Gamble children's birth certs.

Sorry
Unable to help re Thomas Gamble.
There is a "Princeps Road" in the suburb of East Fremantle, Western Australia.
I don't know its origin.  East Fremantle Town  Council may be able to help. (admin[at]eastfremantle.wa.gov.au) phone 08 9339 9339
