Hello and welcome to RootsChat

Civilised Servant may be able to give you more information -but it seems John Ernest Houghton was the son of James William Arthur Houghton and Constance Florence Letchford

They had children Bernard leslie, John Ernest, Florence Eva, and george Walter (they may have had more)

Children were born in Derby -except for John Ernest -he was b lincoln

James William Arthur and Constance married in London

Thank you Suz  :)

The marriage cert I have is for John Ernest Houghton born circa 1905 married to Margaret Hill Jenkins, 1928, this confirms John's father was a James William Arthur Houghton a Cutlery Dealer (possibly - hard to read).

This is really the only hard evidence I have at the moment relating to the Houghton side.

Based on the info here I've looked in to things though and it does appear to 'fit' - in 1901, one of the witnesses to the marriage was Elizabeth Houghton, which got me thinking that this could be James mother.

1891 Census has the following:

1891 Census - 49 Westworth St.

John 'Haughton' (should be Houghton)? Aged 43, hydraulic crane driver/cleaner?,
Born bonsall Derbyshire.
Wife: Elizabeth 'Haughton' age 34, born rugby Warwickshire.

C1: Violet L Haughton, age 11, w Gorton
C2: James W A Haughton, age 14, apprentice fitter, w Gorton

1881 Census - 4 Nellie St.
John Houghton aged 33 born abt 1848, labourer, birth bonsall Derbyshire.
Wife: Elizabeth Houghton, aged 25, born 1856 in rugby, Warwickshire.

C1: James W. Houghton, 4, born abt 1877,  born W Gorton, Lancashire
C2: Violet L Houghton, 1, born abt 1880, born W Gorton, Lancashire
C3: Earnest Marsland, listed as visitor, aged 6, born about 1875 in Manchester.

Then after this I’m not sure if the following is linked but appears to be

1861 Census - no. 9 ??
William Houghton, aged 45, leather factory worker, born cromford
Wife: Elizabeth Houghton, aged 34, born bonsall

c1: john Houghton, aged 13, born cromford
c2: Sarah Houghton, aged 11, born cromford

1851 Census - Moon ??
William Houghton, aged 32, Cotton -- Grinder, Derbyshire
Wife: Tacey Houghton, aged 40, born bonsall

c1: john Houghton, aged 3, born cromford
c2: sarah Houghton, aged 1, born cromford
c3: martha bonsall, niece, aged 10, born chapel le frith, Derbyshire.
(this census also indicates John/Sarahs mother was Tacey rather than Elizabeth!)

The Constance element certainly makes things interesting but firstly I would like to substantiate any of this information, any advice, tips most welcome.

Thanks
