William SNAPE Hanley - collier
« on: Friday 12 November 10 13:46 GMT (UK) »
William Snape. Seeking information on the death of William Snape, a Staffordshire collier. In 1861 he was residing in Hanley with his wife Caroline and children George, Caroline and Sarah. Caroline had remarried by 1864 and I suspect that William had died in the mines. The death of a William Snape is registered in Staffordshire, but in the March quarter of 1861, prior to the 1861 census date. Both of his daughters are missing in the 1871 census and they may also have died in/near Hanley. Any help is appreciated.

If your William was on the 1861 census then his death could not be registered Mar qtr 186as the date the 1861 census was taken is 7 April???

Also you state William Snape was a Staffordshire collier -did you mean he was working in Staffs as according to the census  he wasn't born in Staffs??? He was b lancashire -although there is an entry in 1851 census which (if it is the correct William) gives his p.o.b. as Cumberland?

I am just trying to establish I am looking at the correct family

Who did Caroline marry?? and where??

Suz
Daughter caroline was b London -so they probably moved around to different collieries

The only death I have found of a William Snape in Staffordshire was prior to the date of the 1861 census which shows the family living in Hanley.
William was born ca. 1829 in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
William Snape and Caroline Phillips were married at St. John, Hanley in Sep qtr 1850. Caroline (the wife) was born in Bradnop ca. 1830.
Their son George was born in Hanley 15 Sep 1853. He was my great grandfather.
A daughter Caroline was born in London Oct qtr 1855 and daughter Sarah was born in Hanley ca. 1860.
Caroline (the mother) married William Shaw ca. 1861-1863. George Snape took the last name of Shaw for the remainder of his life. I suspect that William Snape died ca. 1861-1863 in either Staffordshire or Yorkshire, as Caroline's son William Shaw was born in 1864 in Dodworth, Yorkshire.
That's as much as I know at this time, much of which was learned after my first post. Thanks for your interest and help.

A couple more baptisms for you from the LDS pilot site http://search.labs.familysearch.org

Children of William SNAPE and Caroline:

James - bapt. 2 Sep 1852, St John, Hanley, Staffs  (probably died Sep Q 1852)
George - bapt. 24 Sep 1853, Northwood, Staffs

I tried to find a marriage between William SHAW and Caroline, but haven't been able to find one: she remarried (as Caroline SHAW) to Thomas WINTER in 1869.

There's no obvious death for William SNAPE on the death index - there's a couple in Staffordshire, but unfortunately it doesn't give age at death at that time.  :(

ANT: Nesbit, Potts; CHS: Gosling (Hazel Grove/Lymm), Hinton (Lymm), Johnson (Hazel Grove), Marsland (Hazel Grove), Massey (Daresbury), Sorton (Warmingham); LAN: Jackson, James, Potts (Manchester/Salford); MAY: Caulfield, Griffin (Leveelick); SAL: Goodwin, Johnson (Bridgnorth), Gregory (Wellington); STS: Goodwin, Gregory, Johnson (Wolverhampton); Hallett (Trysull); SOM: Dowding, James, Jones (Bath)
