John Cooper - Walsall
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi does anyone know anything about John Cooper who was born in Walsall in 1834.  His father was also called John but I cannot seem to find anything more out about the family.  On the 1841 census there is a John Cooper born in approx 1834 with brother William (b.1829) and sister Elizabeth(b.1831) but I am not sure if this is the correct family.  John went on to marry Hannah Basford on the 7th June 1857 in the Parish Church of Handsworth.  I have also found a baptism record for a John Cooper dated 16th May 1834 at St Matthew, Walsall but I really would like to try to find out the names of his parents.  Can anyone help please?

Regards.

Hayley

firstly how do you know in 1841 tha John is with his brother and sister? as relationships are not given inthe census

as you know it is best to work backwards from any proof you have so have tyou got hte marriage cert which states JOhns age fathers anme and occupations for the both of them?
who were the witnesses at the marriage these could be relations of JOhn

Is this the John you mean in 1841 ?
 HO107; 983; 10;: 9; 11;
Bank Street Walsall
John 40
Elizabeth 12
William 10
John 8
All BIC

One way of finding out who was in Johns household possibly as early as 1836 is to check the tithe maps

added i cant read John snr occupation

In 1851 there are 2 possible John Coopers in Walsall
John the son of Ann rut presumably she had remarried Mr Rut on the death of her husband she also has a daughter Sarah Cooper and then lots of little Rut children and the other John is an apprentice blacksmith with a Mr Henry Lesson (cesson) I am sure it says lesson because the C in Cooper is different but it is transcribed as Cessen
No 1. HO107; 2023; 181; 26
no 2. HO107;  2025;  398; : 22;

although it does seem likely that John and Elizabeth and William are related to John jnr in 1841 we cannot at this stage be sure

well the 1841 John does look to belong to you, the telling point would be if you could find him elsewhere in 1851, i can't the only possible is with mother Ann which doesnt seem likely, the 1851 apprentice Blacksmith is most likely considering that was his occupation on his marriage certificate.

you say you have JOhn Cooper bp. with father JOhn in  1834 does this not give his mothers name ?

i have found a William Cooper bp at St Matthew 5 April 1829 s/o John & sarah
