Burnett's in the Durham/Sunderland area
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 20:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I'm new here, and I'm hoping that somebody has some info regarding the Burnetts of Durham. I've managed to trace us back to at least a Hewitt Burnett born in Bishopwearmouth, Durham in 1778, and possibly his father, along with lots of siblings. Seem to have hit a wall now, and was wondering if anyone might have any advice or info that could help.

Many thanks, Emma.

Hi there, wow you lot are quick, thanks very much. Have already confirmed Hewitt's details, he's defintely a direct ancestor. I have managed to find a record of a marriage between a Robert Burnett and Jane Hewitt, and I'm pretty convinced they're his parents, as the names match his brother's baptism records, can't trace Hewitts. I'm now trying to go back further, but can't seem to trace anything certain, so hoping that someone has already done some research, possibly someone still local.
Have trawled through Durham records on-line, and on-line non-conformist chapel records, where I found a bulk of records, as they were members of the Spring Garden Lane Chapel for some time.
They have married Sommervilles, Gledhills and Berries over the years, and we have a few 18th and 19th Century documents, letters and wills relating to all three, plus the Burnetts, if that's of interest to anyone out there.

Best Wishes, Emma.

Hi Emma, Your Jane Hewitt may go back to Co. Down - I found a bunch of Hewitt's who left County Down in Northern Ireland for the Durham area. If you search for the name Thomas Nelson Hewitt, you'll find one of the families in the English census. It looks like 2 Hewitt brothers left Co Down for West Rainton and Pittington. Hope this helps a bit, Mandy
