Collis Family Great Barrington
« on: Monday 08 November 10 01:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have hit a brick wall, I am trying to find the marriages of a William Collis(my GGGG Grandfather) and Mary, and a Robert Collis(possibly his brother) and Mary who resided in Great Barrington  around 1770

I believe that William was born Great Rissington in 1754 and Robert in 1757. Their parents were a William Collis(s) and Elizabeth. I may be wrong. I cannot find their marriage either.

William and Mary had the following children born Great Barrington,
William(my ggg grandfather) c 25/12/1772 who married Mary Watts at Bampton Oxon on 16/4/1801. They lived in Great Barrington until around 1808, and then moved to Lower Swell.
Ann c 26/2/1775 married Charles Oldaker Great Barrington 23/1/1797.

I believe that they lived at Barrington Mill. The GFHS Burial record shows that Mary Collis died in August 1815 age 73
Robert Collis died in 1823 age 66 at Little Barrington.

Any Information

Thanks

Dave

Dave,

I note that there's a few Collis entries in Gr Barrington to be found at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

Worth a look.

Regards

Chas.

A Robert COLLIS, (unknown gender!!!) miller of Grt Barrington, had a will proved in 1809:-

http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Search.aspx

which may well flesh out the exact relations between some of your Collises.

The IGI also has the following marriages listed:-

05 MAY 1751      Great Rissington   WILLIAM COLLISS m. MARY KENDELL
10 JUN 1787      Headington           WILLIAM COLLIS m. MARY DREWITT

How do they fit in with yours?

Thank you both for your replies, I have looked at the IGI and pilot search for Great Barrington, but only births for the period seem to be listed, I cannot find any marriages.

The marriage of William Colliss to Mary Kendall 5th May 1751 Great Rissington appears to be too early, and I had discounted it.

I did find another William Collis Birth which is a close fit, who was born 1751 Minster Lovell Oxford to a Deodatus and Ann Collis, but again cannot find any marriages

I found an interesting document  online called "A poll of the election of a knight for the Shire County of Gloucester" 6th May - 17th May 1776 Page 81 under Slaughter Hundreds, Little Barrington where Robert Collis is listed as owning Land.

Have now received a copy of Robert Collis Will from GRO. an interesting document written the week before his burial in December 1808. Unfortunately did not tell me anything new.

I have studied a film of the Great Barrington PR's which I obtained from the LDS Library. Quality was very poor, my eyes ache, but again I have not really found anything new.

Have also searched Phillimore's Marriage records online for various listed Parishes in the Gloucester/Berkshire area, still no record of marriages. Have also searched some Oxford PR's  of which I have CD copies. Where did they come from ??
