I'm also a member of both, but if I could choose only one, it would have to be Ancestry, if only for being able to search for deaths in the BMD, without wading through pages of indexes.  Because many of my ancestors come from London, the TNA records are useful too.

The Genealogist often has better census transcriptions, and the ability to search by address on any census between 1841 and 1901 is very useful too.  The Genealogist also has a very useful search tool where you can put in a name and some keywords, and it will pull out all those records - this is very useful for finding surnames born in a particular area, or surnames with a particular profession.

As others have said, try as many as you can either with a free trial, or by trying a few Pay-As-You-Go's  :)
RIP 1949-10th January 2013

Best Wishes,  Nick.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.  I'm sticking with The Genealogist for now because it seems best suited to my needs and I don't think I need to be too particular until I get to the stage where I am hitting dead ends in which case I might switch allegiance!

Thanks again
