Visiting TNA - Questions, Questions!!
« on: Sunday 07 November 10 17:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm planning a vist to the national archives this week, and wanted to ask about obtaining copies of microfiches.

I was there a couple of months ago on my first visit, and noticed what looked liked printers over one side, and either read about, or overheard someone talking about putting money on the readers card to pay for copies.

How does it work?  Can I put money on my card, or should I make sure I have lots of change with me?  What sort of change - how much are copies?  How do I actually get a printout?  When I went past the microfiche machines last time I couldn't immediately see a big 'press this for a print out' button, so how do you do it?

Hope that isn't too many questions in one go!

Thanks for any help/advice available.

Julia

Hi

I think you can load your reader's ticket with money to pay for copies, but you can also use cash.  The staff will help you, as will most other researchers.  I'm sure it can't be that tricky or they'd have a guide on their website.

To get copies you will need either a reader's ticket or a pay card. [You will need a reader's ticket if you wish to look at original documents from the catalogue - if you do not have one then you will need evidence of who you are - passport, driving licence- and where you live - utility bill or similar] You can load money onto your card using notes and/or coins. There are change machines in the reading room. Photocopies cost 20p each and all are printed on A3 size paper. You can print from fiche, microfilm and from the computers. The helpful staff will show you exactly how to do what you want to do. There is a session on how to get the best from your visit which is held every morning at 11.30 am.

Suggest that you also visit here before your visit:

Thanks Jeuel, I don't doubt that there are people around to help - I asked enough when I was there before! :)  I'm just the sort of person who likes to know what they are doing before they get somewhere!

Thanks jds, that is useful info.  I got a reader's ticket when I went a couple of months ago, so that bit is sorted.  Hopefully if I get there before 11.30 I will be able to go to the talk.

Thanks again
Julia
