Interesting that you mention the numbers Jim. I always thought that, unlike WW1 medals which have name and regt of recipient, WW2 medals did not have identifying marks on them (or am I thinking of those issued for UK forces?

If John does decide to purchase new ribbons, I think he should keep the originals too (there's just something about them which gives character to the set of medals. My opinion anyway.
