Hi Jean,

Well I found you on Ancestry.com and we are not a DNA match.. Its always a bit disappointing when you make connections with someone and you find out you are not related but it also clarifies and sometimes verifies things.. Guess there were a lot of Pinkertons in Ballymoney.

I know what you mean about family drama.. I have come across a 2nd gt. uncle that fathered a daughter and refused to marry the mother.. I was able to make contact with direct descendants of the daughter and they are grateful that they can fill in some blanks. Wonderful people.. Had another one just find out her dad is not her dad.. The DNA sure can have shocking and unexpected results.

I wish you the very best of luck in connecting your ancestral dots and its been a treat to speak with you.. Thank you for taking your time to share your info......Take care.... andid

Hello, again, andid -

Are you familiar with the one-name study of those with the Pinkerton surname, compiled by Geoff Pinkerton: The Pinkerton Resource Page?

It has taken me a few days to locate it. This is the link:
http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~pinkerton/genealogy/index.html

Be sure to follow through on the links in the left sidebar of the main page.

The information Geoff Pinkerton has compiled may prove helpful to you and others.

I enjoyed your tales of family drama. And some people think their ancestors were boring. :)

Best wishes -
Jean

Hello Andid,  I followed up your mention of your DNA on My Heritage, and it seems we may share some DNA; at least, I don't know about your test, but I share a small amount with a Winifred Wilson, whose public tree includes Frederick Pinkerton and Martha Wilson. I have a first cousin twice removed  Frederick George Linn Pinkerton, b. 1868 in Banbridge, co. Down (my Pinkertons are otherwise almost entirely from Ballymoney area). If this isn't your Frederick, The relationship could also of course be through the Wilsons?

Hi LindeL,  I dont have a clue how I am related to Winifred Wilson... I am a 3rd to 5th cousin to her.. I looked at it for a bit and havent figured anything out yet.. I do not have a subscription with MyHeritage so I dont have a very complete tree on there.. I have a much more completed tree on Ancestry with a subscription.. I do most of my research through shared matches and just hope that I will figure one shared match out and that will get me on the right path for many others.  I looked at numerous shared matches with Winifred and have not figured them out yet.. I was also hoping that one of them was currently checking in with the site but none that I looked at had.. I had figured out that my Pinkerton connection was through a Samuel Pinkerton from Ballymoney.. I have it listed in one of the posts above.. My family migrated to the states from Canada.. We lost contact with all relatives there and in Ireland.. So Winifred's Martha Wilson could be the connection too. My gt. grandmother was a Martha Anderson, she married my gt. grandfather Robert Wilson from Ballymoney..I have not been able to find very much info on my Wilson family so her Martha could have been the daughter of a gt. uncle of mine.. But its all guesses at this time... thanks for contacting me and if you have any additional clues, I would love to hear what you may like to share... Andid

PINKERTON
Hi Linde
Pinkerton.   My father’s sister (now deceased) told me more than once of holidaying as a child with Pinkerton relatives (from Ireland) in Dunedin New Zealand.    I am wondering if these Pinkertons may first have been resident in Australia before going to NZ.   Have no Christian names to attach.   According to directory there are Pinkertons in Dunedin area today.
My father & aunt’s  parents – Dickey & Connolly.  Both families originating from the North of Ire.
Regards – Dinny.

Hello Dinny
I am baffled by your query! At first glance I thought your query must relate to my own exact family in north Antrim. My grandfather Alexander Connolly married Mary Pinkerton. But they lived and died in county Antrim, and I don't know of any of their relatives, Connolly or Pinkerton, who emigrated to New Zealand at any time. However! I have a Pinkerton family photograph album of very old photos. None were identified, though my father and my aunt guessed at a few. One unidentified photo is of a prosperous couple. The photograph was from a Dunedin studio. I can send you a photo of it if you PM me with an email address. I don't know who they are but as I say, I don't think we have space in the near family for NZ relatives.
There are of course Pinkertons and Conollys in the wider area round Ballymoney, (in Kilraughts and Finvoy and so forth)  to whom I'm not so closely related (though maybe DNA will prove they are all connected), and it is entirely possible that there are relatives of those families in NZ. But I wonder why the Dunedin photo??

My great great uncle Alfred Pinkerton did emigrate to Australia, to Wangaratta, but as far as I know his descendants stayed in Australia.
