William Eames - drowned in Bangor c 1909
« on: Friday 05 November 10 21:43 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help...

My aunt has recently told me the sad tale of my great great grandfather's (William Eames born c1838) drowning in the early 1900s in the bay near Bangor Pier.
Seemingly there was a storm brewing and he and his son set out to check their boat before the storms arrived.... Sadly, he was drowned (I'm not 100% sure but I think his son was also)

Can anyone provide any further details on this please - maybe it was in the local newspaper at the time?
thanks in advance for any help

Hi,

Do you have his death certificate?   If there was an Inquest a local newspaper would probably have carried a report;  the county Record Office might have a copy of any Inquest.

It would be difficult to search the newspapers without a date.

Hi my mother was told the tale of the drowning also but was told that it was the son Moses Eames who died so learning of Williams fate also is very sad and news to us. I wonder what type of boat they were attending to?

Hi to all,   Moses Eames( son of William Eames master mariner) married Maggie Jones Q2 1907 Bangor 11b 754. Both Moses and Maggie are recorded in 1911 census.  There is a death ref. for a Moses H Eames Q4 1935 52yrs Bangor 11b 538. Hope this helps your research.

I wonder if this person may be in your family? Have just come across a memorial inscription in Llanfair is gaer (Near Caernarfon) for Mary Eames, daughter of Nathaniel Eames and Ellin, late of Cefn Madryn, Llaniestyn, died 28th Dec 1828 aged 33.

Hi there, Thank you for your reply. I don't have any of those Eames names in my research.

Hi
Can confirm the Free BMD info quoted for both William and Moses. Age at death quoted agree with ages given in 1891 and 1901 Censuses for both. Will have a look at the local papers next week.
Have recently been looking at Parish Registers for Pwllheli Registration District area and have noticed quite a few Eames' in that area.
