Hi everyone...
please can anyone help me in my search for any information on a relation of mine john selsby...
He was born around 1826[ all depends on what records you look at] in bolney sussex...
I have managed, with the help of the census,to get back to possibly 1841 ???
but for some reason i lose him on the 1851 census...
He was married to jane ? and she came from cuckfield sussex..Any information on their marriage would be great too.
many many thanks
jacqui

Could you give us the full details (or at least the ref) of 1861, so we can see the full household then and try and work back?
Thanks

the details on the 1861 census is as follows..
JOHN SELSBY[sometimes spelt silsby]
ABT 1828
BORN BOLNEY,SUSSEX
LIVING IN CUCKFIELD,SUSSEX
other household members are...
JANE SELSBY 29
JOHN            6
JANE            4
MARY A        3
SARAH           16 MNTHS...
On the 1871 census there is a daughter AGNES aged 12 but she doesn't appear on the previous census aged 2 ???
Also mary A and sister sarah do not appear with this family on the 1871 census.
many thanks

A possible for the marriage

Oct/Nov/Dec 1853
Cuckfield 2b 217
John Silsbey / one of brides on same page Jane Chatfield

Marriage cert would give father's names and occupations and thus make them easier to find in earlier censuses

They married at Holy Trinity, Cuckfield.   Bachelor and Spinster. Oct 15th 1853 both of full age and of Cuckfield.  He is a labourer.  Both made their mark Fathers John Silsby and William Chatfield.  Both labourers.  Witnesses William Pilbeam (mark) and Mary Silsby who signed.

Baptisms to John and Jane at Cuckfield
John Oct 1 1854
Jane Sophia Sep 7 1856
Mary Ann Mar 7 1858
Sarah Agnes Apr 1 1860
Harriet Louisa Feb 13 1862
George Jun 5 1864
William Aug 5 1866
Albert Oct 4 1868
Emma Frances Oct 3 1871
there may be more but I stopped at that point.  I am afraid that some of them obviously died if they don't appear in the later census.

Edward & Eliza Silsby are also having children from 1860 on (first one is Sarah Sep 12 1860 so may muddle with your Sarah) and Henry and Mary Silsby are there too having children.

thank you Andrea for taking the trouble to write all that for me..
I know John and Jane were still having children in 1877 as my henry John was born then and he later went on to marry Emma elizabeth Turner in 1900 and the daughters they had were named after plants!!!!!! :)
