How to find Ellen WRIGHT
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 08:49 GMT (UK) »
 ???  HI all
John wright was born in Edenhall, Cumberland in 1817 migrating to Melbourne, Australia in the 1850's where he met Ellen Roy born 1838 In Hurtletoot, Antrim, Ireland.   She migrated to Australia with her older sister in 1857.  John and Ellen married in Melbourne in 1860 then proceeded to have 6 children, 2 girls and 4 boys, one of whom died at 10 months old.
All John's certificates say he was a labourer, I have been told he worked building the railway line to Sale, then the line from Albury, NSW as a ganger.  I do have his death certificate in 1902 which states his occupation as a railway ganger, but we cannot find Ellen anywhere!
Also, it is hard to find any of the children, although John Jnr born 1867 has been found in a cemetery in Sydney.
Where do we go from here?  I would like to try and verify John's work place, he moved around quite a lot with his railway job.  The NSW railway records do not have him on their employment list.   Apologies for the length of this story, but I have been tearing my hair out trying to find Ellen's death.  A cousin in Sydney has also had problems finding her.  We cannot possibly get all the death certificates with Ellen Wright, I already have two wrong ones!
Any ideas anyone please?

Just a couple of extra pieces of information might help us but I guess you may not know anyway!

Do you have

Second names for John and/or Ellen?

Names of their parents? (Downloading the marriage certificate for abt $17.50 should give you this information if you don't already have it.  The marriage was registered in 1859 and the registration number is 4465)

Place of their marriage?

Could you list the children please with dates and places of birth.

Where did John die and where is he buried?

Small pieces of information can sometimes narrow searches down considerably.

Cheers, Judith

;D  Thanks everyone for your help.
I do have all the birth certificates for the children, I have only recently discovered two more children born 10 years after John (1867), William b. 1877 and Denis b. 1878 in Albury, NSW.  The first William born in 1861, died at 10 months of age.  Treadsoftly pretty much has all the children apart from Denis born in NSW.
I also have a copy of John and Ellen's marriage certificate [well I got a copy of the marriage book!].   Ellen was baptised Ellen Magill ROY, and John did not have a second name.  They were married in Melbourne in Dec 1859.   John's parents were John WRIGHT Snr and Sarah VARTY.
I do not know if John was a widower when he died, it does not mention his wife at all.  The information for the certificate was given by his son John [the name certainly has come down the line].  I have a feeling Denis died before his father, as he is the only son not mentioned on the certificate, but cannot find his death either.
I think John is buried at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney, but as I don't have the info with me at the moment, it is going from memory. He died in Lane Cove, Sydney in 1902.
Any little snippet would help.  But we certainly would like to find Ellen's death.

Hi Lesley,

Which "wrong" death certificates do you have for Ellen already?  (Year/place)  I see a tree on Ancestry that has her parents as Thomas ROY and Mary BOAL - do you know if this is correct?

Hi Deb
I don't have them with me at the moment [I'm at work:)] but I do know that one I got had all the correct names, the death was 1881 I think, but the father was an actor and born in England.  Can't remember the mother's maiden name.   Will have another look when I get home.   As the family lived in NSW, we think she would have died there or Victoria.   One of her daughters moved to NZ, so we have also checked there.
Ellen's parents were Thomas ROY and Mary BOAL from Hurtletoot, Antrim, Northern Ireland.   The tree on ancestry doesn't have any information I do not have from memory.  Have you found a tree with verification sources, as a lot of trees on Ancestry do not have that so I don't complete trust them?
I have been able to verify Ellen's baptism at the parish church in Antrim through the parish records and contact with someone who wrote a book on a family who were also parishioners of the same church.

Thanks.
Lesley

Lots of information there - you have both done well!

I am assuming you would have discounted this death -
1887  Ellen WRIGHT, parents Thomas, Mary registered Sydney #679

Oh, so many Ellen WRIGHTs  ???

:-\ Hm yes Judb that is the wrong certificate I received!
Got quite excited when I saw that one, but the father was an actor.
You're quite right, so many Ellen Wright's which is what makes it quite hard.

Oh well, thanks for looking.

Cheers
