toronto help please
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 10:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello,I have family who emigrated to Canada in 1912, believed to be Toronto.
They are Frank Thomas Foulkes born 1882 in Wales, his wife Lillian born 1884 in Wales and children Lillian May Foulkes born 1904 and Dick Foulkes born 1911.

Frank Thomas Foulkes fought in WW1 in the Canadian army. By trade he was a master mariner. It is believed he was later employed in the harbour master's office at Toronto.

Would it be possible for sks to see if they appear on an electoral roll or similar? I would love to know what happened to them.

Grateful thanks for any help whatsoever.

All I could find for them was an incoming UK passenger list that had Frank Thomas Foulkes (b 4 Jan 1882) and Lillie Foulkes (b 30 Apr 1884) arriving on 30 Jul 1956 in Liverpool. The address listed for their stay was 1 Plascoch Terr., Beaumarais, Anglesey. They were staying for 2-3 weeks.

Looks like Lillie visited another time as well. She is listed as travelling alone arriving in London on 8 Apr 1924. She lists the same address as where she will be staying.

I don't see anything in Ancestry's Canadian records for their children or them other than that.

Lillie Foulkes return to Canada in 1924 from visiting her mother, E. Taylor 1 Plascoch Terrace Beaumaris was on the Carmaria leaving May 15, 1924 and arriving May 23, 1924.  Destination was to husband Frank Foulkes at 670 Kingston Road, Toronto.  This form further states that she had left Halifax 31 March 1924 and that she had originally arrived in Canada Mar 1910 at the port of Montreal.  Can't find a record that shows that arrival.

There is an arrival for Frank Foulkes, 29, seaman, 8 April 1912 on the Scotian which left Glasgow and Liverpool and landed Halifax.  His destination was Toronto.

The Toronto Library will look up people in their city directories (address and employment information) via email and there is also the paysite Pages of the Past (Toronto Star) which is invaluable for tracing people in the Toronto area.

Have just realised Frank Foulkes was crossing the Atlantic just a few days ahead of the Titanic, which left Southampton on April 10th......... and sank four days later on the 14th April.

Hello I am returning to this branch of the tree again. (I have a lot of branches!!)

I have been unable to find any death record for either Frank or Lilian Foulkes.  I believe Lilian died after 1966.  Believed to be still in Toronto.

I am with FindMyPast but they don't show Canadian records.

Also did their children  Lilian May (b 1904 in Anglesey) and Dick (b 1911 in Liverpool,) return to the UK?

Many thanks for any info.

Marriage records for 1928 have recently been released to the public and the following is included ...

Harold Edwin Tarlton 37 Bachelor Cashier
married
Lilian May Foulkes 24 Spinster living at 670 Kingston Rd Toronto b. Wales
f. Thomas Frank Foulkes
m. Lillie Taylor
22 Sep 1928 at Toronto

Due to privacy laws, death records in Ontario are not available to the public after about 1939 so your best option is the Toronto Star pagesofthepast mentioned earlier. There was also a Toronto Telegram but I don't know if they have an online archive. A google might produce some info re this.

Recently released voters lists have a Frank and Mrs Frank Foulkes living at 9 Costain in 1935, 1940, and 1949. Frank is listed as a Civic Employee in 1935 and 1940 and Marine Captain in 1949. It appears the info about this Frank would go with the info you originally supplied. There is another Frank mentioned in later years in Toronto but his wife is named June and he is a Factory Worker, which doesnt seem to match.

Harold and Lilian Tarlton are also traceable in Toronto in the voters lists.

You might check if your local public library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition. This would give you access to the Canadian Records, including images. If you are near a Family History Center (the familysearch folk), they may have it as well.

The 1921 Canada census is due to be released next year and this may be of some help to you.

We search for information but it is up to the thread owner to verify that it is correct.

Hi

A quick peak in the Toronto Star turned up Frank's obit.  You can find it in the Nov 11th, 1966 edition, at page 32.

Basic details - He died on Thursday, November 10th, he lived on Danforth Road, was a Captain.  He was the dear husband of Lillie (so she is still alive) and dear father of:
May (Mrs H E Tarlton)
Dick
Hilda (Mrs J Leavens)
Not sure how Hilda fits, but she is mentioned!!

Also says that he had 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren at the time.

Buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Scarborough (east section of Toronto) on Monday Nov 14.
