Hi Rosemary

Check out the following website which contains an Intimations database for Ardrossan, Saltcoats & Ardrossan AND a few others in the near vicinity. The Intimations were/are contained in the local newspaper "Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald". Registration and search is free:

http://www.ayrshire-roots.co.uk/

An Adam BELL probably received an Award (Medal/MID) in early-1946. It was noted his residence was Parkend Road and his mother's 77 Raise Street both of Saltcoats. It was not unusual for an Award to be presented some time after the event as evidence had to be gathered from witnesses and assessed, the event assessed and a recommendation made. This would explain the delay between the end of the Second World War and the presentation of an Award. Contact the local Librarians and ask if they would be kind enough to check the 1st March 1946 edition of the A&S Herald for such a story. The e-mail address is

Hello,
From the information I gathered from the Ayrshire Roots website I am pretty sure that my  father-in-law, Adam Baxter Bell, was the son of William Bell and Mary Ann Baxter of Saltcoats.
I'm sorry I have no dates of birth so far.
regards Ro

Hello,
Many thanks for this information about William & Mary Bell - it appears to be in the right time frame.
From the Ayrshire Roots Intimation  database I have managed to make inroads into this part of the family. Thanks to Q98 !

Adam Baxter Bell  marr Wiliamina Campbell 1937, daughter of  Elizabeth Baird Campbell,  Saltcoats, d. 11 August 1944
BELL Wilhelmina 14/01/1938 "Mossend", 36 Moorpark Road, East Stevenston  dau of Adam & Ina Bell -  ( died in infancy  )
two living children.

*- Bella & Alexander Gilmour 1, Foundry Cottages, Stevenston
*- Mary, 6 Craig's Place, Saltcoats )
*- David, 6 Craig's Place, Saltcoats) both unmarried died 1968
*- Elizabeth & Bob Nixon,  6 Wyllie Road, Saltcoats
