Obadiah Berrisford
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 20:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am looking for Obadiah Berrisford, Berresford, Beresford, who originally came from Ashover, Derbyshire. He married Barbara Shepherd, the sister of my great grandmother 4th May 1855 at Wesleyan Church at Goulburn, New South Wales Australia. He was sent as an exiled convict to the colony 20th August 1849 on the "Randolph".
According to IGI he was baptised 19 March 1815 at Ashover; his parents John Berrisford and Roseanna Else. This baptism was submitted by a member of the church so I am not sure if it is correct. Also I am looking for any siblings of Obadiah if possible.
Thanks Barbara. :)

If you go to this site you will find Obadiah's record, which is not a submitted entry but a transcript of the original record.  Possible siblings Mary Ann, Ann, John and Godfrey

Hello Eumungerie,

I notice that in 1847, your Obadiah was in trouble for stealing potatoes, a crime that had him sentenced to 7 years penal transportation, and that at his hearing, the judge mentioned another matter that was in trouble for (previous convictions in other words). Are you aware of this matter? In 1844, he would have been 28, the report of 1847, says he was 31 then.

The Derby Mercury Wednesday, March 6, 1844

Obadiah Berrisford & Joseph Berrisford of Ashover were both charged with stealing two hen fowls, two ducks and one drake, the property of Thomas Siddal and one spade the property of James Else.

Also, in the same newspaper: The Derby Mercury,Wednesday, November 1, 1843

Joseph Berrisford, pauper in the Chesterfield Union Workhouse, was committed to 2 months hard labour for assault on Thomas Huckins.

I will send PM for his trial in 1847, just in case you don't have it.

Tom

Hi Eumungerie

Barbard Shepherd was my great great grandmother.  I am a decendant of Obadiah, John, Clarence, and Joyce Berrisford.
