Hamon, just checked Black's Surnames, a Gilcrist Makwrerdy held the lands of Bransar on Bute in 1506.
  Mainly found on Bute & Arran and every instance quoted spelled different. Patrick MacVarthie, portioner of Stravanan, Bute in 1622.
 The name occasionally cited in the Icelandic Sagas as Myrkjartan, the name of an Irish king. Modern Gaelic, M'Urardaigh. How many folk can boast such a pedigree?

Hello, just an update.  I got hold of the film from family search but it didn't show anything for a McKirdy on 15/12/1881, only a strange entry registered by a police officer, with no names or addresses or even the registrar's details.

The only thing I can think of is trying the maternity hospital records.  Can anyone tell me which hospital Anderston would have come under in 1881.

Most likely a home birth and only reccord would be birth certificate

I thought of that Sancti but she was 38 when he was born and I can't find any record of other children born to them, if there had been miscarriages or still births I would have thought they would have opted for the hospital.  Also her sister had her son in the Glasgow Maternity Hospital in 1874.

It's my last hope !!!

What was his occupation on the Irish census records?

Hello Sancti, he was listed on the 1911 Irish census as a Mechanic and the 1901 as an Engine Fitter.  He went back to Scotland sometime around 1917 until 1921 or 22 and then returned to Ireland, where my Aunt was born in 1922. 

On his father's Poor Relief application in January 1920 in Scotland, his details were given as born in Anderston, 41 and married with 5 children and was working at Armstrong & Main, Petershill Road, as a Labourer.

What were the names of Christina's children and DOB's

Hello Sancti. the children were:

Margaret Kerr Taylor - born 01/11/1962 - died 31/01/1876

Robert George Alexander Kerr - birth cert says 'or Taylor' - Illegimate.  Born 05/06/1874.  I can't trace him at all.  I've tried the deaths on SP but there were so many Robert Kerr's born that year.  I tried the area's they had lived in and a few others but no luck.

I also contacted the National Archives in Ireland because Christina's death certificate said she had died in the Dublin Workhouse.  She had been admitted with the flu in 1919 and died a couple of weeks later.  Unfortunately, they only kept records of the family if the family were also taken into the workhouse.  He didn't appear on either of the Irish census forms.

That's all I can tell you.
