I am curious to know how most of the Farrell children ended up in an orphanage in Sligo (Banada Convent near Tubbercurry)
It would appear that Grandad, James Farrell and Grandmother, Catherine must have both died within a very few years of the 1911 Census and within a short while of each other
I am aware that that period of Irish history was one torn by conflict and I did wonder if the events are related?
If the death I found for a James Farrell, cooper, in 1931 is correct one then perhaps it was only the mother who died when the children were young. In that case James was probably unable to look after such a large family on young ones and the family were split up.
Would be nice to find death for Catherine Farrell to fill in more of the family story. Perhaps she died away from home.
Do you know when children went to Banada Convent and their names? I'm wondering if perhaps some died young and/or were taken in by relatives or friends.
