Help with a marriage date.
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 08:50 GMT (UK) »
John LILLEY & Margaret NEVILLE were in the 1851 census for St Helens Lancashire.
They were married & gave their place of birth as Ireland. They were 24 & 18 respectavely.
I have been unable to find their marriage in England, so presume they married in Ireland before moving to St Helens. Unfortunately I don't know where in Ireland they were from. They were Catholic.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
Thank you.

You need to know where in Ireland they came from to research parish records - see : Introduction to Irish Records

Have you found them on later census returns to see if a county of birth (or town) is ever listed ?

I have never been able to find whereabouts in Ireland they were from.
So I guess it is impossible to find marriage or birth records.

It really depends on where they lived as to how to progress.. but since you have the two full names, at least you will know for certain if you find a match.

The place to try first is www.irishgenealogy.ie  This (free) website has records for some parts of Ireland ... Dublin City, parts of Co. Cork and City (RC only at the moment), Co. Kerry, Co. Carlow (Church of Ireland only) - more records are due to be added soon.

you could be lucky and find them there..

Other records for some parts of Ireland are available on the Irish Family History Foundation website  http://www.rootsireland.ie/ - but this is a pay-website
