Thanks so much for all the info Monica, I will keep plodding along and see if I can find anything else - I have spent hour upon hour searching for siblings of John but never been able to find anything! ... back to the drawing board  :-\

Hi,
These are the transcribed records for Broomfield in Edinburgh trade directories:

I've just noticed that Catherine was 14 when she married Richard :o

Here's another wee snippet from Google books - the Broomfields had a long tradition of baking in Edinburgh!

Hi both,

<<Legal age for girls in those days was 12!>> It's just that I'm not sure I was ready for marriage at 26, Monica.  Different times!!

Just to re-cap on what we know so far:

1812 Adam Broomfield married Elizabeth Field, Edinburgh

1819 Adam Broomfield married Jean Fairbairn, St Cuthbert's Edinburgh

1830 Feb: Catherine Stevenson died, she was the relict of Richard Broomfield, so if their son John was born in July 1829, Richard must have died between July1828 & Feb 1830

1830 Feb: John Stevenson, Smith died at the Canongate Charity Workhouse, aged 70 of old age.

1831 Feb: John Stevenson, Bookseller died at 60 North Castle St aged 40

1831 Nov: Jane McDonald, widow of John Stevenson, Smith died at 121 Princes St aged 49

1832 July Archibald Stevenson, Blacksmith, died at Jack's Lodge aged 31

1838 Sep Janet Woof, wife of Robert Stevenson, Smith, died at Canongate aged 35

1840 Feb Robert Stevenson, Blacksmith died at the Royal Infirmary aged 42

The above is mostly from the Canongate burials pdf, picking up on the name Stevenson, occupation: Smith.  What puzzles me is that there are many Stevenson references in the pdf, but not Broomfield, which makes me wonder if the Broomfields, although having an evident long standing connection with the Canongate Parish, had their roots elsewhere.

A bit more, but not exhaustive, from IGI, searching Broomfield, Midlothian:

children of Adam Broomfield & Elizabeth Field:
Margaret born 1813 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh
James born 1815 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh

children of Adam Broomfield & Jane Fairbairn:
Agnes born 1823 St Cuthbert's Edinburgh
James born 1826 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh

children of John Stevenson & Jane McDonald (IGI extracted):
James born 1803 Canongate (father's name given as John Thomas Stevenson)
Elizabeth born 1806, Canongate

Im going to sit down with all this new information you two have kindly forwarded on to me and see what I can work out.
