What ever happend to Mary O'NEILL ?
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 00:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My grandfather has been researching his family for as long as I can remember and has hit a brick wall in regards to his grandparents.

We are trying to find out what happened to Mary O'Neill as a start.

We have a marriage certificate for George Willmont Johnson and Mary O'Neill registration #330, year 1857 in Victoria.

Details are

Date: 9 March 1857.
Location: St Peters Melbourne
Grooms Details: George Willmott Johnson, born Ambleside, age 25, his parents George & Catherine Woods
Brides Details: Mary O'Neill, born County Carlow, age 19, her parents Edward O'Neill & Ann Murphy

The next event we have for George Willmott Johnson is his marriage to Margaret A Kelly in Young NSW, in 1884. Registration #7451.

I would like to try and find out what happened to Mary O'Neill between the years 1857 to 1884 if at all possible, did she die ? did she remarry ? did she just vanish ?

Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions of where to look.

Michael.

Hi

Is the second listed marriage (1884) for the chap with parents GEORGE &CATHERINE  nee Woods

 OR
Is it for a son of theirs by the same name?

You have not given parental details for the second listed marriage. :D

Sorry Sue,

Same person.

The Parents for the 2nd marriage for the bride are Patrick kelly & Ann unknown.

I descend from the 2nd marriage.

Basically George Willmott Johnson gets to Australia somehow before 1857  (hasn't been identified), marries Mary O'neill in 1857, migrates to New South Wales and ends up getting married a 2nd time to Margaret A Kelly in Young 1884. He has 3 children with Margaret (Caroline, James, Jane) possibly more, all of which end up in orphanage and he dies of cancer. Not sure what happens to Margaret A Kelly either at this time.

So I would like to start and try and find out what happened to his first wife, then the 2nd wife and finally, find out how he got here and find a link back to the U.K. at some point.

Thanks Tredsoftly

That is one of his daughters and might give me another lead, but if in 1945 they are reaching out for help, 65 years later mightn't add much light.
