Charles M. Gidney and Mortimer C Gidney - which is which?
« on: Monday 01 November 10 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I have a Charles M. Gidney - photographer at Mornington Place, Holloway Down, Leytonstone (Kellys) in 1908.

I have a Charles M. Gidney - photographer at Leytonstone Road, Leyton born1861 in Hampstead, Middlesex,
with lodger Catherine Maxwell (widow) born 1851 in Stepney, Middlesex. Occupation: Machinist in 1891.

In 1901 I have a Charles M. Gidney - photographer at Leytonstone Road, Low Leyton.
Married to Catherine Maxwell (49) born 1852 in Stepney, London.
Their children are
Mortimer Charles born 1892 in Leytonstone, Essex
Leonard Barber born 1893 in Leytonstone, Essex. (He marries Clara Jane Cook (1897-) in 1920)
Kate H born 1895 in Leytonstone, Essex

I cannot find him or his family only in 1911 only a Bernard Henry Gidney - photographer at Janson Road Stratford. He is born 1856 in Hampstead, London and has been married for 27 years to Emily born 1859 in Hastings, Sussex with one child - Ethel Violet born 1887 in Hampshire Basingstoke.

To confuse matters I have a Mortimer Charles Gidney - I thought they may be the same person as this one is born December 1861 in Hampstead, Middlesex and I think his parents are Charles ‘Gedney’ born 1830 in Bow, Middlesex (Occupation: Ham and Beef Dealer) and Hannah, born 1831 in Islington, Middlesex (shown in 1871 amd 1881)
A Mortimer C Gidney seems to marry someone called Collett in 1915 and dies 1933 in Woolwich.

I not sure if I have two separate people or I'm missing something?
Any help apprecuated

Hi,

Leonard Barber Gidney gives his fathers name as Mortimer Charles Gidney, a photographer, in his marriage to Clara Jane Cook....

And, there are no Charles M Gidneys born c. 1861, but there is a Mortimer Charles Gidney............

At the moment, I'm thinking the evidence points to there being only one MC/CM Gidney (but not conclusive yet  ;))

Get hold of the birth certificate, that should answer the question over his forename and middlename.

That said, there is a second Mortimer Charles  - the son.  I would presume that it is the son who marries in 1915.

It's not unusual for first and middle names to switch places, and I agree with Spidermonkey that CM and MC look very much like the same person - I can see either Charles or Mortimer on any given census, but never both on the same one.

As you probably know, we may not do 1911 lookups due to copyright issues, but the free index shows a Leonard BARBER b. 1892, Leytonstone living in Woolwich.  The other (probable) household members are Catherine, Charles, Mortimer and Kate - why the surname should be given as BARBER I have no idea, but the names and ages make it look very like your family!

Hi,

There are a couple of trees on An....ry that have a Mortimer Charles Gidney born 1861 Islington (mother Hannah) married to a Catherine Sarah Barber with the children you mention.

Barber seems to fit - I suppose Catherine N. Maxwell could have changed her name to Catherine Sarah Barber.

His sons -  Mortimer C Gidney marries Frances M. Collett & Leonard Barber Gidney marries Clara Jane Cook.

Still not sure if Bernard Henry Gidney born 1856 in Hampstead, London. Occupation: Photographer fits in at all?

Thanks to everyone for their help so far.

When Mortimer Charles Gidney married in June quarter 1891 West Ham it was to Catherine Sarah Maxwell (as shown on 1891 census she was a widow).   Barber would have been her maiden name.    The 1901 census shows Catherine M. (not N.) and the M could be referring to previous name of Maxwell.
