Church baptism 1797 Co Wicklow
« on: Monday 01 November 10 13:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the origins of my 3GGF John Underwood. He appears in the England & Wales 1841-1861 census records as being born in Ireland. The only reference I have been able to find to a John Underwood is 'Church baptism 1797 Co Wicklow'. This is approx correct year according to the ages in the census records. Unfortunately I have no idea what parish he was born in, or any info regarding his immediate family in Ireland.
Can anyone suggest where I might look please?
Thanks  ..  Peter

unfortunately you need to know both the family religion and the parish before checking for records, as not all parishes have records going back this far.

I am currently researching RC Wicklow Parish registers in the National Library, I hope to get in again on Tuesday afteernoon, I will look at 1797 for Wicklow town for you and let you know if he's there.

my guess is that Underwood is more likely to be a non-Catholic surname...

There are a few Underwood baptisms listed on the IFHF pay-website (www.rootsireland.ie) around 1797 in Co. Wicklow - as far as I can see they are all Church of Ireland

note - not all parishes in Co. Wicklow (RC or CofI) will have records as far back as 1797

Thanks Shane,

I suspected so much, I have not noticed any Underwoods in the RC registers and I have been through a few of them  in the last month or so.

There were no Underwoods listed in Wicklow in Griffits Valuation, there were 5 households in wexford though.
