Your father's date and place of birth should give clues as to where to look for the death of his mother Mary Josephine Mernin whom I assume was married to a Maguire. You can  search the Irish civil registration index at the LDS online site for a marriage and death. Also there are quite a number of Mernins registered in the index in Waterford.

Was googling Mernin and came across this blog with Mernin contributors. You may find it helpful to link up with other family members.

Good luck in your search

Just to update, after finding Piaras Beaslai's collection in the National Library of Ireland and communicating with the 2 historians who worked on his diaries, it turns out that Piaras is my grandfather and Lily Mernin is my grandmother. My father has finally learnt the truth about his parents...thankyou to all who helped!

Can you see a little green scroll under their user name? if yes, click on it, write message in box then send. If not, make one more post here and it should work.

On site www.ainm.ie  (http://www.ainm.ie/Bio.aspx?ID=4) regarding Piarse Béaslaí I found the following, translated from Irish . She (Lili Mernin had a son in London 1922 and Pádraig ó Siadhail is in no doubt but tha Piaras was the fatherr.  He helped her financially.  Piarse knew that he was the father. His son did not meet him until 1944 but his son Seán Maguire never knew that Piarse was his father.
Pádraig ó Siadhail  is author of book on Piaras -  An Béaslaíoch: Beatha agus Saothar Phiarais Béaslaí (1881-1865), 2007  (Life and Works)
