Stillwell WW1 Army
« on: Monday 01 November 10 08:04 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone trace Frederick Albert Stillwell in Army records? I have tried but to no avail, but I'm not sure I have looked everywhere! Fred born 1895 in Battersea and next of kin duing WW1 would be mother Annie (Susan Annie). His brothers Henry Isaac and William George served, Royal Field Artillery.

I presume that you have tried the NA medal rolls:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/browse-refine.asp?CatID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1

Frederick Albert Stillwell- brings up no hits

Frederick Stillwell- brings up 10 hits, but 2 have an additional initial which is not A

F. Stillwell - brings up 2 - one of which is Reginald F A

So, that would give you nine possibles - assuming that your man did join the army and saw overseas service.

Swarbrick - all and any - specially interested in all who served in WW1

To add to the last you can discount 51213 Fred Stillwell as he was Killed In Action with Manchesters.

The other Medal Index Cards for Fred Stillwells dont seem to have any addresses on the rear(just looked on Ancestry)

Ady
Lowe(Lower Gornall-Castleford)
Blackburn (Castleford)
Sidwell(Ledsham)
Fairburn(Hartshead)

Thanks all, back to the drawing board and GM original opinion that he was in the Merchant Navy. I'm not entirely convinced he served at all, he was a sickly bloke who spent a great deal of time in hosptials during the 20s and 30s, my dad says it was 'mental issues' - maybe as a result of what he experienced during the war or maybe he couldn't serve because of it?
