Lost in Hastings WOOD's
« on: Sunday 10 April 05 03:23 BST (UK) »
George WOOD married Susannah BLEVINS at All Saints Hastings 1817 and they had a son also George born 1817 who married Mary HOLLIS (dont know where or when ..... still searching). However they,in turn, had a son Joseph Samuel who was born in Paddington London 1839.
This Joseph Samuel was a widower in Marylebone in 1871.
He remarried on 30 Oct 1871 at St Clements Hastings to Frances WOOD  !! ............. and Frances parents were William and Sarah (SPICE).
My thoughts are that they (Joseph and Frances) may have been cousins.
Trouble is ........ there is no evidence so far that the WOOD/BLEVINS partnership yielded any other than son George (1817) which rules out the 1st cousin possibility.
DO PLEASE help me out of the WOOD's

Frances WOOD there are 320 listed in the 1871 cenus, so probably was not a rel at all.  Maybe she had married before.  William and Sarah are living on their own as you probably already know.

Do you have an age for Frances.

Could it be a transcribers problem? and they have written the name WOOD instead of SPICE, do you have the marriage certificate

The only Frances WOOD I can find in the 1871 census birn Hastings c1845 is married with 3 children.  A stretch of the imagination to see her widowed and remarried in 6 months

Thank you for your interest robraw,
I should have added that I have them in the 1881 census living back in London (Marylebone) with his son of former marriage (Joseph George born Marylebone).

Joseph Samuel ...    head 41 born Paddington
Frances     ..........    wife 36 born Hastings
Joseph George ...... son 12 born Marylebone

The parish record of the Hastings St Clements marriage (30 Oct 1871) states 'Husband previously married' and of Frances it states 'wife's father = William WOOD and Husband's father = George WOOD'.
I have a baptism of a Francis WOOD to William WOOD and Sarah (SPICE) 19 Aug 1844 at St Clements that 'fits the frame'
What I would like to find out is if there is a relationship between the fathers of the couple......... at present I feel that as they were not brothers ..... perhaps they were cousins?

My records from a transcript of St Clements show that William Wood MARRIED Sarah Spice on 19th August 1844.

As it is not a direct ancestor I haven't yet searched the BAPTISMS but it seems a co-incidence that the date of Frances' baptism is the same.

Thank you JohnLW .......... I need to correct an obvious omission in my earlier mail as follows;
"I have a baptism of a Francis WOOD to William WOOD and Sarah (SPICE) who married 19 Aug 1844 at St Clements that 'fits the frame'.
Sorry about that ............ I got the marriage details of Joseph Samuel WOOD to Francis WOOD and it states;
Date 30 October 1871 Hastings.
Husband previously married .... (which fits my needs).
Husband's father George WOOD
Wife's father William WOOD

Hi Joe

Here is your Frances WOOD and  family thru the census 1851 to 1871 (the clue is in 1871  ;D)

1851: St Clements Hastings, Sussex
HO107 -  Piece 1635 -  Folio 305 -  Pg 14
ADDRESS: (None Specific)
Wife: Sarah WOOD 33, marr, Husband Fisherman
Dau: Frances WOOD 6, Scholar
Son: William WOOD 4
Son George  T WOOD,
All born Hastings
Can't find husband/father William elsewhere (on a Vessel)? in 1851

1861: St Clement Hastings Sussex
RG9- Piece 562 - Folio 150 - Pg 53 & 54
ADDRESS: East Street
Wife: Sarah WOOD 43, marr, Fishermans Wife
Son: William WOOD 14, Errand Boy
Son: George T WOOD 12, Errand Boy
Dau: Sarah WOOD 9, Scholar
Son: Stephen J WOOD 6,
Dau: Ellen WOOD 3,
All born Hastings

This is a probable for the absent 1861 husband/father:
1861: VESSELS: "Forty" - At Sea off Hastings, Sussex
REF: RG9 - Piece 4457 -  Folio - 76
William WOOD Head of Family, Master, 39 Charter Fisherman, b Hasting
Has 2 married male crew on board named MAYNARD & LUCK

This is a probable for Frances who was not in house with mother 1861- can't see another Frances/Fanny to fit:
1861: Hastings St Leonard,  Sussex
REF:  RG9 -  Piece 561 - Folio - 186 -  Pg28
Head: Eliza GOLDSMITH 33, unm, Fundholder b Middlesex
Companion: Mary A FORRESTER, 37, unm, Lady Companion, b Dunterton Devon
Serv: Fanny WOOD 18, unm, Cook, b Hastings
SerV: Elizabeth WATTS 27, Housemaid, b Erith Kent

1871: St Clement Hastings
RG10 -  Piece - 1029 -  Folio -  56 - Pg - 37 & 38
ADDRESS: 9 John Street
Head: William  WOOD 49, Fisherman,
Wife: Sarah WOOD 52,
Dau: Frances WOOD, 26, unm, Laundry Assistant,
Son: William WOOD 24, Warehouseman
Son: George Thos WOOD 22, Gas Fitter
Dau: Sarah WOOD 19, Laundry Assistant
Son: Stephen J WOOD 15, Errand Boy
Dau: Ellen WOOD 12, Scholar
Lodger: Stephen N or W SPICE 42, unm, Fisherman
Lodger: James SPICE 35, unm, Fisherman
All born Hastings

So now a YOB for William WOOD of approx 1822 Hastings and he was a Fisherman (I assume it did say he was a Fisherman or Mariner etc on Frances' marriage record to Joseph?)

Cheers

This is a possible William WOOD in 1841 - the closest I could find:

1841 All Saints  Hastings, Sussex
Hundred of Hastings
REF : HO107/1107/2 , Folio 20, pg 14
ADDRESS: Henry -- ?Terrace
Thomas BURTON 40 Fisherman - N
Frances BURTON 40 - Y
William WOOD 19, Fisherman - Y

It would be interesting to know if Frances the wife of Thomas, was nee WOOD or formerly married WOOD...because of her name echoing your Frances.

1851: St Clements Hastings
REF: ss: HO107; Piece: 1635; Folio: 321; Page: 47
ADDRESS: 21 West Street
Head: Thomas BURTON, 51, Beer Shop, b Penterden? Kent.
Wife: Frances BURTON 50, b Hastings Kent

Cheers

Oh Yes! Chris in Hastings
I was just updating the 1841 - to add the 1851 BURTONS - and wondering if Frances BURTON was previously a Mrs WOOD  ;D  Looks distinctly possible after seeing your information!
