Hi

Noticed these in the Marriage Registers

Location: Hastings All Saints, East Sussex,  Date:  4 Aug 1817:
Groom: George WOOD
Bride: Susanna BEVINS

Location: Hastings All Saints, East Sussex,  Date: 20 Dec 1819:
Groom: George WOOD, widower
Bride: Frances FAIRALL

In the baptism registers, there is a child to George & Susanna before two children to George & Frances

Hi again

Found this in the burial register for All Saints

Susannah WOOD This Parish 5 Dec 1817 aged 21

me thinks she died and George then married Frances because he had a child to look after

Baptism at All Saints, Hastings

George Wood, son of George & Susanna Wood,  Labourer - but the date of the baptism is 5th Dec 1817, the same as Susannas burial - so, did Susanna die in or just after childbirth ?  she must have been at least 5 months pregnant when she married George.

So: hypothetically, if this is all proved right:--

George snr  married 1= Susannah and had George jnr who married Mary HOLLIS  and they had Joseph WOOD

George snr married 2 = Frances and had William who married Sarah SPICE and they had Frances WOOD.

Which would make Joseph's father the half brother of Frances' father.

Joseph & Frances had the same WOOD Grandfather, but different Mrs WOOD Grandmothers.

What relationship would that make Joseph & Frances, if it were right?  ::) Half first cousins? I's lost now!

Cheers

Adding to reply #5 concerning Frances in 1861.
I have checked the 1851 census for any Fanny Wood and have found none - so this makes it more probable that Fanny is Frances.

By the way in both 1851 and 1861 the WOOD family shared their address with other families - on both occasions two of the wives were sisters of Sarah WOOD (nee SPICE).

In 1851 Mary Ann Mann (nee SPICE) and Elizabeth COBBY (nee SPICE)
In 1861 Elizabeth COBBY again and Lisa (really Eliza) STACE (nee SPICE)
Whitelock (essex), Arrowsmith (northumberland), Spice (hastings), Linge (suffolk), Blackmur (london), Mitchell (Sussex)

I must sincerely apologise to you all for not responding to this topic earlier.
At that period I spent a rather long time in hospital (longer than I thought I would) with the result that as I had'nt temporarily discontinued my rootschat and email contacts there were far too many emails etc to face up to so I ruthlessly deleted hundreds of them.
I returned to my Wood quest a few days ago via Ancestry and got so confused with the number of family trees that have claimed my WOOD lot (wrongly I add) that I did a 'search' on rootschat and found this topic which I had truly forgotten about.
So it's back to sanity.
Thank you all for your contributions which I have speed read and they look great (as usual being rootschat) so I shall spend a few hours updating the WOOD part of my family history.

Back into the WOOD(s) with an update or two.
Everything fits with what you good people have done for me so thank you so very much.
I have progressed a little further and feel that I can discount all the entries/claims  on Anc..... as incorrect as they are based upon another George Wood (born within a very few years of my George Wood) who married Mercy Sargent.
As I see it my George Wood married Ruth Pumphrey on June 12 1775 and he was the George Wood shot dead at Hastings on 30 Dec 1874 as he was pushing his fishing boat out.
They had four children;
Mary Sept 1777
George Aug1780
William Sept 1782
Ruth Mar 1785
With Ruth being born fatherless.
George's wife Ruth died as swebby said in 1824 aged 74.

which are all related.
What do you think?
