Apperley Baptisms in Lancashire
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 11:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone could shed any light on this for me.

On Lancs OPC for Lancaster St Mary’s they have 2 baptisms for Appleby and it should be Apperley. But why would it be listed under St Mary’s Lancaster and then say it was performed at the Garrison Chapel Fulwood. Any ideas?????

Baptism: 12 Apr 1857 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Appleby - [Child] of Edward Appleby & Jane
    Abode: Barracks Fulwood
    Occupation: Barrack Labourer
    Baptised by: Edwin Smith, Chaplain
    Performed at: Garrison Chapel, Fulwood
    Register: Baptisms 1852 - 1859, Page 220, Entry 1756
    Source: LDS Film 1526200

Baptism: 3 Feb 1856 St Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
William George Appleby - [Child] of Edward Appleby & Jane
    Abode: Fulwood Barracks
    Occupation: Barrack Labourer
    Baptised by: Edwin Smith
    Performed at: Garrison Chapel Fulwood
    Register: Baptisms 1852 - 1859, Page 178, Entry 1417
    Source: LDS Film 152620

Edward Apperley died 6th June 1859 in Fulwood Barracks but I don't know where he was buried. In fact he doesn't exist except for his childrens birth and baptisms and his own death certificate.

Regards

Joan

It could be that the barracks chapel came under the patronage or may be within the Parish of St Mary's and acted as a satellite of the Church but under the control of the army.

Hi

Edward Apperley did indeed exist - found a likely military record for him.   Enlisted 19/1/1831 at Gloucester in 3rd. Regiment of Foot Guards where he was until 31/10/1831.    He then transferred to the Grenadier Guards (at his own request) to serve with an elder brother.

He was a Cordwainer aged 20 when he joined - 5' 9 3/4", Fresh complexion, Hazel eyes, Dark Brown Hair.

He was discharged 12/6/1855 - 'Impaired constitution from age and service' - declared unfit in London 12/5/1855.

I then checked and found an online tree which confirmed I had the right man.   Edwards baptism on familysearch pilot bp.6/5/1810 Fownhope with Fawleye, Herefordshire, shows just son of Mary Apperley but think this should read Richard and Mary.   The elder brother in the Grenadier Guards was Samuel who was a son of Richard and Mary and 5 other children besides Samual and Edward born.

Richard Apperley was also a military man - not much available this time.   Served 25/8/1805 to 25/12/1813 in the Royals, and 26/12/1813 to 24/9/1814 in 2nd. RVB (son of Richard Apperley and Ann Harris).   He married Mary Williams 7/7/1807 Fownhope.

Children - all baptised Fownhope with Fawleye:

Samuel bp.21/2/1808
Edward bp.6/5/1810
Elizabeth bp.11/3/1813
Margaret Maria bp.18/5/1815
Ann bp.25/4/1816
Mary bp.25/9/1817
John bp.11/10/1821

Edward Apperley married Jane Edmunds (date not known - she was bp.24/12/1814 St. Mary, Woodbridge, Suffolk, dau. of Giles Edmunds and Hannah Scrutton).   They had the following children:

Catherine bp.24/2/1836 St. Mary, Woodbridge (d.1836 to 1839)
Mary b.1838 Woodbridge, d.1843 London
Catherine b.26/5/1839 Chelsea
Edward b.1841 Kensington
Robert b.28/2/1844, bp.1/3/1844 St. Saviour, Chelsea, d.16/9/1844
George Robert b.1845 Chelsea
Charles Francis b.1848 Chelsea
Jane b.30/10/1849 Chelsea
Sarah b.28/12/1850 Hammersmith
Thomas b.29/7/1853 Kensington and Chelsea
Plus the William George and Elizabeth you mention at the start of this thread.

So, Edward Apperley did indeed exist.

Hi Annette,

Thank you so much for that. I've looked all over for his army record but obviously In the wrong place. I don't know much about the military records. I keep hoping that a marriage will eventually turn up. I am going to put all your information onto my tree on ancestry. I had so much already but that vital army record was missing. He died in Fulwood Barracks June 1859 of phithisis (3 months) as a barracks labourer. I went to the Barracks but they didn't have any information.
Sarah was my great grandmother but she and her older brothers and sisters weren't on the 1851 Census even though Jane was. I think she must have put them in a cupboard.
Thank you once again.

Hi,

Thank you for that, I will go and find both my grandfathers. It might tell me if they got any medals.

Kind regards

Joan  :)
