Are there any records of Firemen kept for WW2, Grandfather was part of 'home guard' style unit who stood firewatch in London, would I be able to find anything for this?

It might be worth checking the London Metropolitan Archives or the National Archives. I am sure one of them might have some details
Maylin/Hide/Sharp/Taylor of Hitchin
Brewster of Ilford/Romford/Dagenham Areas
Grice from Blything/Blythborough/Ilketshall Areas
Witt from Fordingbridge Area
Teal from Doncaster
Wattam from Doncaster/Sheffield/Lincolnshire
Chamberlin from St Pancras
Howard from Essex/Edmonton
